Big Book of Boxing magazine had this as one of their "Dream Fights" back in the day. They had Mcguigan, then the hot commodity and at the height of his powers, winning via 9th round stoppage. I like Lopez around that time. Notwithstanding cuts, the way to beat Lopez was turning him and angles. That wasn't Barry's thing. He wanted to come at you in more of a straight line.
Wow. Helluva match-up. I hate to admit, as an Irishman, that I am more a fan of Danny and think he would win this after a brutal war.
The Mcguigan of around the laporte and pedroza fights gives him all he wants. But then again its only fair both are at their best. Tough call. I can see them spiltting a few fights. McGuigan lived clean, coulda fought all night and had great whiskers (forget the cruz fight, his whiskers were good). Hes better than given credit for nowadays as at 1 stage he was getting a tad overrated which, i believe, led to to guys going full circle and tending to underrate him somewhat, what with the HOF induction and that. Im not so sure bout him being KO'd either although if anyone could, Lopez could. Im not being biased either, im not his biggest fan to be honest but i will concede he could fight. Just my 2 cents
That's ok Seamus, I'm pretty sure that despite the Lopez surname and the Indian headdress gimmick, Danny was also a bit Irish.
