Thank you Jel!! I always think of "Irish" as the culprit for red hair. I'm Irish descent and dont have red hair but I have red headed kin folk.
i also think, but cant confirm, that the irish boxer hugh russell, who won the british bantamweight title then dropped down to win the british flyweight title (a feat which i dont think has been replicated) took his moniker Little Red from Lopez
The Mc Guigan of the Pedroza fight on June 8 1985 vs Danny Little Red Lopez, 1978, would have been one of the best match ups in boxing history. This would pit two aggressive combatants against each other. Little Red goes down early, but he wakes up to stop Barry in round 9. Danny has too much power in both hands.
"My Father was half California Mission Indian and half Mexican. My Mother was half Ute Indian and half Irish." - Little Red Lopez, from http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/blog/?p=22347
I love this match up. I think Danny has four rounds and after four Barry takes over. People seem to forget that Lopez got dropped hard by lesser fighters. Of course his power would save him but Barry was pretty sturdy and strong as well.
Actually one of the better mythicals. Lopez had a longer prime and sample size so is probably the safest pick over a series. At their absolute bests it’s actually very hard. McGuigan would clean up a bit on Lopez but he’d also be there to be hit and nobody hit like Little Red so that undoubtedly slows him a tad and results in a grueling, two way battle. I’d say Lopez by a hair on points in one of the best fights ever.
Definitely a close, hard battle. Often McGuigan gets undersold. The man could fight. Classic case of a guy who was probably a tad overrated to a guy who’s become underrated over time.
The problem for Barry is Lopez has one punch power and the ability to hurt Barry at anytime. Lopez tko8
