Danny Lopez vs Wilfredo Gomez

Gomez by decision.

 

Gomez by KO. Danny is just way too easy to hit

 

Gomez by stoppage. Too many punches coming at Danny for this to go the distance.

 

Before he fell in love with his power, around (1979-1980)
Gomez was one of the most skilled boxer-puncher of
that era, second only to the great Roberto Duran as
far as total boxing skill sets between 1977-1978.
That version of Gomez would beat the hell out
of the brave but limited Danny Lopez.
This fight would be very similar to the Sanchez / Lopez
fights where the skillset differences would be plainly
obvious for Gomez.
Now between 1980-1983 I would give Lopez a very
good chance of walking Gomez down and getting
the ko.
Gomez didn't have the chin of Sanchez, and
became a walk in puncher, seemingly forgetting
the skills that got him there.

 

Now here's a fight where I'd take Gomez at 126, this one would be a barn burner for sure

 

Lupe Pintor hurt Gomez; in that fight Gomez was on bad legs for the whole fight. If he wasn't allowed to headbutt, Pintor, hit Pintor with elbows and hit him low at will, would he have won? And Pintor was moving up, as was Zarate.
Lopez is taller than Gomez, who was stiff as hell at 126. He will land his shots on Lopez, and may God help him if he knocks Lopez down because Little Red came back strong when he got up. Gomez is far from unhittable and he didn't react well to getting hit and Lopez would only have to hit him once.

 

I thought I was crazy because during that time period I thought Gomez reminded me at times of Duran but moved laterally better,

 

I didn’t read the time period restriction and can’t change my vote now but just thought of Gomez as a featherweight. - KO’ed by Sanchez, points win over LaPorte and KO’ed by Nelson. Those images were enough for me to vote Lopez by KO.

 

I agree Jel.

Gomez was an amazing Super Bantamweight but Featherweight seemed a bridge a little too far for him.

He's far more beatable at Featherweight and based on that I'd go with the more proven Featherweight in Lopez.

 

I don’t necessarily disagree, but seeing his resume at 126 colors his tenure there a bit, perhaps unfairly. How many fights did he have at 126? Three of any note. He ran up against two true greats in Sanchez and Nelson. Not many would have beaten them. The other fight (Laporte) he dominated.

I’ve never really known what to make of that, big picture.

 

Yeah this is also a good point the opposition he was facing has to be taken into consideration.

The win over Laporte is good but I dunno I have mixed feelings about Laporte.

I've seen him give good efforts before but then in other fights he puts the ear muffs on and doesn't do alot.

So I'm not quite sure of Gomez's ceiling at Featherweight based on the Laporte win.

 

Gomez more talented should win a decision.

 

Gomez the better fighter at 122 but is far more vulnerable above and Lopez is the most dangerous hitters at 126. I think this will be similar to the Olivares fight. Great battle but this will only end with Little Red winning this by crushing KO.

 

Gomez would take him for mine. He's at his absolute peak here - he was yet to fall in love with his power and was an immensely skilled and multi faceted operator. He was a beast, he was peak. His skill would be the telling factor. Both have huge heart and will to win
