Danny Williams career continues (well, sort of) on September 3rd when he faces former cruiserweight champion Al Cole over 6x2 rounds in Sweden. 47 year old Cole hasn't boxed since 2009 when he lost (coincidentally also in Sweden over the same distance) to Timur Ibragimov and Williams is coming off a stoppage loss to Manuel Charr a few months back. Quite what either man has to gain from this bout is a mystery, Cole may well need the cash but Williams claims to be financially secure having invested his Tyson and VK paydays wisely. I can see Williams winning this one handily, but where does he go from here? He can have a few more low-key, low-risk fights and maybe even pick up a trinket like the obscure UBO title he was supposed to fight for a while back but boxing (especially at the higher weights) can never be totally risk-free and if he doesn't need the cash he really should hang 'em up sooner rather than later...
Humans have free will and its his own choice to keep going. I'd rather he didn't but im bored of it now, do what you want Danny, you know the risks
as long as he has no delusions of fighting at a higher class... i can't see the harm (well, i can, but you know. its not like hes going in with a klitschko...)
With so many boxers now fighting well into their 40s and way past their due dates it's time measures were put in place to screen compulsory retirements more closely. Do we have to wait til a 47 year old journeyman dies in the ring?
Hot on the heels of his SD6 win over faded Al Cole Danny next faces unbeaten Alexander Ustinov for his EBA European title. Danny will lose this one handily, I reckon, but would have beaten Ustinov in his prime. I'm not in favour of him facing opponents of this ilk at this late stage of his career, if he wants to continue then it has to be C level fighters all the way - the Laszlo Toth's of this world - so he can get the boxing bug out of his system and maybe pick up a minor trinket or two along the way. What do you think of this latest bout? schedule date opponent W-L-D last 6 location tickets 2011-10-22 Alexander Ustinov 24(19)-0-0 Budivelnik, Cherkasy, Ukraine 12 EBA (European Boxing Association) heavyweight title bout subject to change & commission approval
Anything other than Danny getting brutally KO'd will be considered a victory here. On paper Ustinov should probably have already had a title shot by now, certainly would have deserved it more than Arreola, 'Kingpin' or Sosnowski. Ustinov seems to have stagnated somewhat in the last 2 years. Could be a very dangerous fight for Danny.
Ah what the **** shame on Ustinov for fighting Williams, I actually thought he was going to go someway far, props to Willaims though, the guy is brave or stupid
I'd personally love to see a shock KO win for Williams and then retirement with a semi-major belt... Of course I know that he won't and that if he did he'd continue fighting and lose again. An infuriating fighter...
He could win this, and that's maybe more scary than him losing it because he will carry on and think he can face an even better class of opponent. On his day he'd have dealt with Ustinov comfortably, but now he'll need a lucky punch. I don't want him to think that he can climb the ladder again and get back into contention, that ship has sailed...
