https://www.worcesternews.co.uk/news/23248903.jon-dp-shaw-box-danny-williams-new-date-april/ Sad that Danny is STILL fighting, worse is that he's being allowed to, and this fellow thinks it would be some kind of achievement to beat him inside the distance. I remember Danny as a really talented fighter, that blew hot and cold, and was shot to pieces, what 2008/9?
Man he's so stupid Vitali gave him one of the most brutal one sided beatdowns I've seen and that was about 20 years ago.
49 years old. KO'd 17 times. Lost 32. He's clearly an addict. Would hate for him to sustain a life changing injury in the ring.
Surely this can't be for anything more than a few hundred quid? There must have been something, anything else he could have done to earn money, I've no idea what money he's received taking beating after beating, but it can't be worth it. A real cautionary tale.
Unfortunately I think that's likely to happen. You don't mess around with boxing, it's not a game. And he can't seem to give it up. He's taking shots from heavyweights as well. Surprised it hasn't happened already.
It's a shame someone hasn't saved him from himself, Derek Chisora may or may not be on a similar course, but I think he's already extremely wealthy, whereas I think it's the opposite with Williams.
he’s been “paying for his daughter’s education” for about 15 years. i hope she’s made partner in a law firm by now.
The guys got daughters what are they doing allowing this to continue.. If Danny was a member of my family there is nothing on earth that would prevent me from stopping him from fighting. The man is clearly mentally ill, stop him - threaten the venues that he’s unstable and carries a fire arm or something to frighten them into cancelling. Get the media involved to put pressure on - do something ffs, this is ridiculous.
For a man who if I remember right never seemed in love with boxing and was doing it to please his father to not being able to give it up is sad. I hope he keeps his health but this does not scream happy ending.
Not that I am particularly proud of it but I watched one of William's recent fights on YouTube out of morbid curiosity. His balance has completely gone which I suspect indicates that he has already sustained very serious neurological damage, much like Holyfield in his recent fight. Although he looks in decent shape for a 49 year old he can't really punch any more because of his severe balance issues and obviously he cannot hold a shot. From what I read its all about money but as others have said I just don't see how the fights he is taken now pay anything more than a few hundred. Surely you could earn the same labouring on a building site or something else that does not involve getting punched in the head?
I watched one of his fights a few months back and he certainly doesn’t look like he’s enjoying it, he looks scared. He lost to former lightweight Lee McAllister a couple of years ago. Surely he would do just fine doing the rounds at meet and greet/dinner nights. Or he could write a book. you get journeyman with 10x more losses than Williams that can survive 4-6 rounders against huge hitting guys month after month, yet the man who knocked out Tyson can’t last a round against a complete no hoper. Shows you how bad he really is, he can’t protect himself. Even when shots hit his gloves it rattles him and takes away his legs.
Yep, I've seen one of these "fights", and you're right, his balance was frighteningly bad, really really shocking to see. I totally agree that his family could, or should have done something to stop him, I remember that embarrassing loss to an obese ex lightweight a while ago, even then he looked terrible.
Does anyone know what he's likely to be paid for these fights? Genuinely intrigued. The white collar stuff must be very low. Unless there's betting on a particular round. Matt Legg said Julius Francis got well paid to take a dive Vs Decca Heggie in one of those shows. Ironically Francis beat Williams back in the day iirc.
Not accusing Williams of dives, I know he's genuinely shot through. The thing I find baffling is that he was always a fighter notorious for suffering with pre fight nerves. Hatton tells a story of fighting on the same card as him and Danny couldn't eat due to nerves. Perhaps the pressure is off these days and the nerves go as a result? In a very different sport I was always more nervous when it was a level of field I was expected to podium against. When I went into the Opens I never got nervous as I was expected to finish in the pack.
