Danny Williams vs Frank Bruno

I heard him talking about that to Steve Bunce recently, on a podcast radio inteview. Said he was distracted by the fact that his brother was fighting with people in the crowd.
Chanet was an awkward fighter though.

 

Came in 100% against Mike Tyson.

Came in 100% against Kali Meehan.

Came in 100% Julius Francis II

Came in 100% Keith Long.

Came in 100% Michael Sprott I

Came in 100% Bob Mirovic

The bottom line is, Danny Williams could throw better combinations. Better single shot punches, he knocked out Mark Potter with a dislocated shoulder......and still had the technical ability to deliver a perfect uppercut, twisting his whole body into the punch in a split second.

Danny Williams was more athletically gifted than Frank Bruno, he was technically more gifted. What excalty did Frank Bruno do better, the JAB..? is that it..? yeh thats about it...!

Danny Williams would spark out Frank Bruno in a exciting fight, but at the end of the night. Danny Williams would be too fast, and throw too many punches inside.

All Frank Bruno had was the Jab, and a straight right hand.....over and over again.

Danny Williams wasn't excalty a ******, and could do a shoulder roll and had good lateral movement when he wanted to fight out of that stance.

 

let me say that the trouble that i saw on the telly actually stopped the fight i think a fight broke out and one of williams supporters must of laid one on a french gypsy and then the williams fans got covered in flying chairs but the trouble only kicked off toward the end of the last round and williams really did not seem tog et going throughout the fight .

in 89 williams was over in new york i think fighting mark wills i have h/l of this fight and i remember for the first few rounds he looked pretty good at times but during the fight i think gil clancy was calling the fight for tv and he said that williams manager made a statement that 600 days from the date of the wills fight williams would beat mike tyson :yikes. clancy and his co fight announcer thought that williams deserved the decision but wills won it on a MD

I do not want to dismiss Sweet D, I had a lot of time for him.

I would go further than that, and say although Thunder had jumped the shark by that time, at least he been in the water, unlike Meehan.

I got to disagree there. Derek Williams with a ticker would of been a very dangerous beast. Derek choked when everyone was looking at him.

I think as you mentioned Samil Sam exposed Williams level. After that was he really taken that seriously? I do not think so, hence the likes of Tyson falling short against him.

Anyway I thought I was supposed to be arguing for Danny, you for Derek...

You know the really sad thing was (and thankfully I was proven wrong), although I knew Sweet D had moved to America, I thought he had died a few years back.

I spoke to him a few times when he was promoting/managing, he seemed a nice fella.

Fate has not been kind to a couple of our seemingly genuinely decent British Heavyweight Champs (Mason and Oyebola), it is nice to know a former Commonwealth King is still very much alive and kicking!

Mason's recent passing was very sad, and the Oyebola murder is infuriating.
Mason was a guy I always thought would make a 'comeback', not as a boxer, but as a pundit or celebrity or spokesman of some sort. But it wasn't to be.
Yeah, it reminds us, with good people we should appreciate them while they are here.

Williams may be the better athlete and more co-ordinated fighter but that doesn't always make you the better fighter. Jermain Taylor was clearly more athletic than Pavlik and Vitali is often described as robotic, ungainly and awkward yet dominated Williams. Bruno may not have looked great but was effective at what we did and proved he was miles better than any version of Danny Williams. Bruno may only have a great jab and big right hand but Vitali didn't really need anything else to beat Williams with ease.

Don't simply judge a fighter based upon athletic ability, boxing is more than just being a physical specimen and naturally gifted. Bruno always came in 100% and apart form the second Tyson fight always gave it his all in the ring. Williams often seemed to be inconsistant and was beaten by fighters who were not has athletically gifted, not as skilled and technically proficient. Don't see why a better fighter in Bruno could not do what inferior fighters like Francis and Sprott could do.

I have said it before and will say it here again. Williams was a good domestic level heavyweight but nothing more.
