Vic Darchinyan's much-anticipated boxing rematch with Nonito Donaire has fallen through, but there may be a world title silver lining later this month.
WBA and WBC super flyweight champion Darchinyan signed a contract on March 30 for an August 21 bout in Los Angeles with Filipino Donaire, who took away his two flyweight world titles in July 2007.

But Darchinyan's manager Elias Nassar has revealed that WBA interim super flyweight champion Donaire failed to respond to a deadline earlier this week to sign and return his contract.

Darchinyan is scheduled to have a non-title warm-up fight on May 20 against another Filipino, Richard Garcia, at Sydney's Parramatta Leagues Club.
Nassar said there was now a chance that Darchinyan could fight for a world title on that date, though tenth ranked IBF flyweight contender Garcia wouldn't necessarily remain the opponent and the proposed title fight could be at either super flyweight or bantamweight.

He and Darchinyan's American promoter Gary Shaw and have been working the phones over the last couple of days to arrange a world title fight.
Nassar said Darchinyan was disappointed by Donaire's decision not to sign up for a rematch.

He said boxing's inability to deliver fights between its leading contenders was one of the reasons mixed martial arts organisations like UFC were gaining momentum.

"These are the fights the fans want to see. Vic fights for his fans and he is very frustrated," Nassar told AAP.

"Gary Shaw informed them (the Donaire camp) of the timeline and they wanted to run their own race, we have moved on.

"There's a very good chance that Vic will be fighting for a world title on May 20."

Nassar was unsure whether any world title bout arranged for May 20 would be for a belt belonging to a major or secondary boxing organisation.

I read this earlier and, as a huge Darchinyan fan, I'm gutted:-(. Hopefully he'll get a crack at Montiel or Perez now before Donaire snaps the fights up.

Donaire is overrated IMO, on the back of his win with Darchinyan. Would be good for Darchinyan to try and get his revenge which he can. And perhaps knock Donaire down a peg or too.
