Darchinyan gracious in defeat By Ray Wheatley Two-division world champion Vic Darchinyan has requested that Fightnews send Abner Mares his congratulations on his outstanding victory in one of the best fights for 2010, and also for being such a great kid. It was very disappointing for me to lose the fight against a good young fighter like Abner Mares, Darchinyan said. Congratulations to Abner, he is a tough kid who fought a great fight. Even after winning seven world titles I have learnt something valuable and that is not to leave the decision in the hands of judges. The only negative thing I have to say from this fight is that we should be talking what a great war me and Abner had, and not talking about the way the fight was over-refereed. I have never had a point taken off me in all my fights and I am sure Abner hasnt ever had a point taken from him, Let us fight! We go into the ring and we fight for our lives, we both should be allowed to fight our natural fights. Both of us were always being told to do this and that, I think the referee started to confuse himself and not only us. Its hard to have a split decision loss when I think I won. But now looking at it, some people think Abner won, some people think I won, and a lot of people think it was a draw. All I know is that I fought a great fighter who fought a great fight and I fought a great fight. Thats what happens when everyone you speak to says it was a war in the ring and a great fight and everyone has a different opinion on who won. I am angry that I lost, but Im not angry at Abner Mares. He has been respectful to me from start to finish. I am just angry that I allowed the fight to get to stage where it was so close. We had a great fight and I hope in the near future we can fight again. It was good to fight Abner. I think Abner is a lot like me and that is we will risk everything for our fans. Our fans wouldnt want to see us fighting bums like other fighters do. We didnt have to fight each other. The same goes for King Kong and Yohnny Perez, we are here for our fans and without them we would ne nowhere. I cant wait to fight Perez. I know its going to be a war and I know I wont make the same mistake again and leave it in the hands of the judges again. I will make sure to go out and finish the job I started. Posted somewhere with news about fighting. Good stuff from Vic! Glad he conceded and has an actual grip on what the general boxing public feel about that fight. Can't wait for Perez - hope he's even more charged for that fight and continues for Montiel or Donaire. Would be awesome to see him hang them up after a couple of Mijares level wins!
Good get PCE... Vic you would expect to come from this a stronger fighter. Very respectful to Mares and he sums up what makes great fights...grat fighters willing to put it on with each other for the fans and most definately for the bragging rights....old school.
Great sportsmanship never goes out of style. Neither does all-action fighting. Can't wait for the next bout against Perez, Vic will be fired up!
That's a much better reaction to be honest. 100% better than his original one. Granted, much of that was in the heat of the moment.
Agree with Ippy and TC in that the after fight interview with Vic wasn't good. However I'm glad that he came out and said this because Mares was really gracious after the fight in his praise for Vic and he came across as a really nice guy.
I think his people watched the interview and have realised that VIC didnt come off to great thus this article was released from his camp. Its good to see that they are not one eyed midgets living in the land of the blind and are willing to right a wrong.
when a fight is that close, 1 or 2 rounds making the difference, it is expected that each fighter will think they won, and it would be a shock if they didn't get the win. although he could have been a little nicer post-fight, u wouldn't want the guy to be too happy with a close loss. a loss in boxing can be the end of some guys careers. good to see the comments after cooling off though.
He seemed like a sore loser after the fight, I'm glad he did this now, he also showed that he can still be in the mix with the top guys. Hopefully he gets the rematch
I didn't think he cAme off as too sore of a loser. Yes it wasnt the most sportsman like behavior but there was a lot on the line for him, add to that it was a hell of a battle going toe to toe, back n forth all night and one would feel pretty hard done by not getting the nod. That's without considering the referee who over played his hand IMO and had more of an impact on the fight than a referee really should. Yeah both guys did some dodgy stuff (arguably) but nothing so malicious they wouldn't get away with it with most other refs and when its as close of a fight as that was, any little things whether it's an accidental low blow costing U a point (Mares) or not being allowed to fight to your natural style (Vic), it's the difference between a loss and a win. Yes Vic whinged too much in the post fight, not praising Abner, but he didn't diss him either. He just vented about the ref, who I was bitching about from round 2 anyway.
Pretty much sums up why im such a fan of Vic. He's a passionate guy who genuinely believes he can beat anyone in the world and wants to prove it. I think the post-fight speech was more from frustration and disappointment rather than being a sore loser. Still nice to see him give Mares his props, i hope they do meet up again down the track.
I thought the ref was crap and needed a spray but the ref was neutral so no need to go on with it. I still think Vic did enough to win....Congratz to Vic....you gotta love him :good How good is King Kong :adminIMO he will dust Abner
Tend to agree mate The way he moved every time just before Perez threw was so nice....his This content is protected . Thats the best I have seen him box....we know he can fight and bang but geez he boxed well
