He wasn't a guy I spent a whole lot of time watching in the 90's, but I've seen some clips of him. There has always been controversy about who was at greater fault for Jones Vs DM never happening. Virgil Hill was probably about the closest thing the light heavyweight division had to a lineal champion after Spinks vacated the title and DM beat him before Jones did. Over the following several years, DM and Jones coexisted as champions, primarily fighting comparable and in some cases the same opponents. Who do you think was the real champion during that period? I've argued in favor of Jones in the past, but looking back and looking more closely I'm not so sure anymore. Its kind of hard to proclaim Jones as undisputed when he shared a division with a man who beat the closest thing the division had a to a champ first, then ultimately went on to reaching 48-0 before losing in old age.
A friend of mine went down to Germany to spar with DM and he said DM was extremely strong, his jab could take you out, it rocked my friend. He told me at that time that DM had a very good chance to beat Jones and that was before the Jones KO loses Shame this was a fight that should have happened
DM was unfairly stripped of the Championship belts that Jones would go on to take. Jones was a fraud, just like in any other weight class he fought in. DM was the real Champ at LHW.
John Scully agreed with the assessment about DM's jab. However, he was quite adamant that Jones, Jr. would take him. So were a couple of others that had faced both.
