Dariusz Michalczewski: An All Time Great Beast From The East-The Tiger Of Gdansk.

    Dariusz Michalczewski (pronounced Mikhail-chef-ski) was Born on May 5th 1968 6'1 Light Heavyweight/Cruiserweight. He had a 48-2 38 KO's 1 KO loss. Born in Gdansk, Poland but defected to and fought out of Germany. Before Sergey there was Dariusz, Michalczewski is the former lineal Light Heavyweight champion of the world holding the WBO IBF and WBA LHW titles and was simultaneously the WBO Cruiserweight Champion as well. He holds the record for the most consecutive Light Heavyweight title defenses, he was undefeated at 48-0 and was on the verge of tying Marciano's record of 49-0 and he lost via SD to Julio Cesar Gonzalez. Unfortunately he and Roy Jones Jr. never fought they ducked each other for many years, but along the way Dariusz racked up impressive victories over Richard Hall two times in two very entertaining and bloody slugfests, he beat Virgil Hill via UD, he trapped Montell Griffin along the ropes and pounded him into submission and winning by 4th round KO, he may have exaggerated a punch that came on the break against Graciano Rocchigiani getting him DQ'd but he tested positive anyway but Daruisz cleared up any controversy by making him quit in his corner in the rematch. He retired after his first loss in 48 but he couldn't resist making a fateful comeback 2 years later against Fabrice Tiozzo and was KO'd for the first time in his career against a guy he would have most likely steamrolled earlier in his career. Since his retirement he's gotten involved in activism and has come out bravely in support of gay marriage and equal rights for homosexuals something that's not the most popular thing in most Eastern European countries.     Was it the rematch with Hall where Michaelczeskis eyes were swollen up like Rocky Balboa in Rocky I? I recall he went into the corner in round 9 or so, and told his corner "**** I can't see anything, Im blind" "Ok, then knock him out now!!!!" and Michaelczeweksi did exactly that. Classic.

    He was not that good. He caught Hill and Griffin when they were not at their best. He should have lost against Rocky I too. Against Hall, he had one eye totally closed but they would not stop the fight in Germany.

    What he is never given credit for is his accuracy. For a slugger. Man, that guy didn't miss. What a terrific jab as well.

    I used to really look forward to sending away for his fights and watching them. It was tough because his stuff was not televised in the U.S., and he was just not that well known, especially considering that amount of title fights.

    A real shame in that comeback fight though. He looked terrible. But he was a pedigreed fighter and known from his olympic days.
