Toney was overrated and undertrained. Tarver wouldve toyed with Ruiz worse than Toney did. Target practice. Hill's resume was fluffy and he was washed up when he fought Jones. Tarver was 38 and cut a bunch of weight in camp when he fought Hopkins. Jones was probably getting knocked out in one round by Danny Green around that time. But not sure why you're talking about Hopkins. You also named nobody new bc you don't have **** to say.
Toney was a super stylish throwback fighter with natural infighting and counterpunching ability. His highlight reel looks great. In reality, he was pretty limited and never was near Jones’ level. He was bad at dealing with lateral movement and tended to fight down to the level of opponents. His peak in hype was going into the Jones fight. Looking more critically, he’d already damn near lost a handful of fights. After that, his career sputtered out at 175 and to the point where he probably became underrated again. Definitely B list in terms of great fighters due to how beatable he was and how erratic his conditioning could be.
Toney was limited ??? I do not think so. Mc Callum, Nunn and Johnson moved and he beat them anyway. Against Jones, Toney was dead at the wreigh in. Toney beats DM's ass.
Toney should beat Dariusz. I didn’t say he wouldn’t. Reggie gave him more trouble than he should’ve. He lost most of the rounds against Nunn. McCallum was aging and in the wrong weightclass but basically exchanged all night and did well on more than one occasion. Tiberi, Marqui Sosa, and Sanderline Williams also happened before Jones.
I think both Tarver and Toney beat DM. Folks picking DM here just rely mostly on boxrec. Tarver-Toney, now that is a tougher match to call, assuming Toney's is in the right kind of shape.
Sure. Yet, when Toney is motivated and in shape, which seldom happened, he is very difficult to beat. Would have been an interesting fight
I agree. DM was a very good fighter but I don't like how he matches up with either Toney or Tarver but especially Toney. I could see James counterpunching him to death with that right hand. Of course, I'm talking about and in shape Toney.
Toney got spanked by Jones and became "overrated". The great Tarver who lost to Harding in his prime. In his prime. Chad Dawson ring any bells for you? Lost TWICE. So if Tarver was so vastly talented why did he not move up to Heavy and challenge someone? And you also fail to point out a declining Jones BEAT Tarver the first time.
You sound pretty triggered, bro. Jones definitely exposed Toney, except Tiberi and others already had and got swept under the rug bc it was pre internet. Tarver suffered broken ribs and a jaw against Harding, but avenged it and ruined his career. Harding was very good until Tarver destroyed him but you don't seem to know it. Go watch the first half of Harding's fight with Jones before he gets injured. Jones in the first Tarver fight was very good but not as good as for the rematch in which he was put into orbit. Btw I don't think Toney and Jones avenged anything unless we count a DQ knockout. Tarver was pushing forty when he lost to Dawson. Tarver beat Jonathon Banks and deserved to beat Cunningham at heavyweight in his mid forties. I have zero doubt that he wouldve beaten Ruiz ten years earlier.
