I dont think Jones wanted the fight. I remember reading that Jones requested HBO not to mention his name as part of a renewal contract or something. Michalczewki also put out a full page add in the boxing magazines challenging Roy.
In their prime it would have been something. I would have been rooting for Michalczewki, but Roy likely would have defeated him. Michalczewki was the blue collar guy, so i would have rooted for him, the power jab guy, the pressure guy, the under dog, just like i rooted for Hatton over Floyd. That didnt turn out so well, though.
Tiozzo beat him when he was shot. Michalczewki mopped the floor with Hall of famer Virgil Hill, and ran over Griffen, who twice beat Toney and once almost beat Roy. Hill beat Tiozzo twice, once by decision and once by first round KO.
His jab was a thing to behold, maybe even better than GGG'S. It was a devestating jab. Toney would have to try to deal with that. Michalczewki kicked Hill's ass bad! Hall of famer Hill!!
DM would destroy Sturm if they were the same weight. Sturm was kind of lazy and lost to Geal who was fast and busy. He would stop a Sturm type fighter at his weight.
You look at boxrec, I witnessed the circumstances at the time those fights took place. DM was not shot. Tiozoo beats any version of DM. Griffin and Hill were not at their best. Griffin had to take the fight on short notice (they had a funny habit of doing that over there in Germany) and Hill was coming back from an injury. Not to mention that he Griffin stoppage may have been premature (refs were always for the home based fighter in Germany) . Griffin beat Toney on paper only. Most thought (as did the HBO crew) that Toney deserved the nod in both fights.I hope this puts things a little into perspective,
I was a fan of Michalczewki at the time and would order cd's from collectors because i didnt get the german braodcasts. So it wasn't only boxrec at all. The DM that lost to Tiozzo was not the DM that thrashed Hill who had just unified the the division vs Maske. He was slowing, and struggled in wars vs Hall, he fell behind vs the Tricky Harmon before he bit down and stopped him. DM had the the flu in that fight. DM had lost to Gonzalez, who really wasnt in his league. He did seem in great shape vs Tiozzo though. Tiozzo had his number in that fight. I dont know what would have happend had Tiozzo fought the DM of the Hill fight, that would have been good.
There seems to lots of excuses coming from the losers. The stoppage of Griffin was slightly premature but was inevitable because DM was a great finisher. I dont want to see Griffin hurt, but after he wined about the stoppage, i think the ref should have let Griffin get layed out. Then there wouldn't have been any controversy. That's clearly the direction it was going.
That talent pool at 175 back then was shallow a puddle. Might have been the weakest light heavy era in history. Jürgen Breahmer was better than most of the contenders. DM was just 35 when he lost to Gonzalez. Roy had already beaten Gonzalez with ease. At 35 AB was running through the likes of Vosdich , Callum Johnson, Antony yarde. Callum Smith turns 35 next month . He just beat undefeated Buatsi who is better than Gonzalez and number of the other euro c levellers on DMs padded hometown record
This is flat out ridiculous. Nobody ran over Toney in nearly 100 fights, a career spanning from middleweight to heavyweight. Don't forget that Griffin was winning handily the first 3 rounds against DM before he got hurt. DM would not be able to hurt Toney.
