Because when your considered the p4p #3, and have recently looked awesome against opposition considered to be much better than Barker, then Martinez was expected to either blast Barker outta there or be in complete control for as long as it lasted. He did neither.

And when your Barker, and have fought absolutely no-one even close to world class, then its a complete guess how your going to get on, and he did much much better than 99% expected him to do. Even he must have questioned this looking like Pac v Hatton or Pavlik v Lockett.

 

Eddie had it level. That's a surprise. Him and Dave Parris went to the same scoring school. Sarcasm aside, nice interview.

I think the result of the fight proved what people were saying was correct though. Darren has skills as amateur background shows but you can't go into top level and hope to win without having one tough fight in your career unless you are massive puncher.

Everything went right for Barker: Martinez complacent, had a good start, busted his nose, but he still wasn't close to winning fight because he didn't have the conviction that he could win as he'd never had to pull anything out in his career before. If he had had the equivalent fights Honeyghan had before he fought Curry he might have been able to get upset. Instead winning vacant titles all the time and never getting Macklin/Lee fights he was ill prepared.

Hearns is a great promoter. He has put McCloskey and Barker in at the deep end so they could find their level. In defeat both found that they can't cut it as elite fighters but they could contend. I respect that much more than Frank. He would DEFINITELY protect them for many years until they took a shot at a weak WBO champ.

I agree Barker is yet another Brit almost completely unprepared for his big night. Back from surgery, has one fight in a year and a half and then goes to the US for the first time to take on the PfP no.3. Ridiculous really.

I wouldn't compare an utterly ****ed Don Curry with Martinez though.

i didnt like the fact that during the 10 bells for the boxer who died, there was a shitload of whistling and jeering from a few people in the crowd.........very disrespectful.

 

Hearn looked like he was gonna cry in interview with Barker.

 

I agree he would beat macklin in a really exciting fight let's hope it could be for a title though.

 

I don't. Hearns loses nothing in testing his fighters and them losing. Their stock has gone up because despite the loss we found out both are better than we thought and can come again.
