people forget that sutherland was at the ingle gym and all set to turn pro but instead bottled it and flew back to ireland and did his leaving cert at the age of 21 or something instead of turn pro. i think he feared failing

i saw him around and few times and exchanged plesantries. he was a nice, quiet and shy type of lad. you would never think he was a boxer. softly spoken also. you could be forgiven for thinking he was gay

he had a long term girlfriend and they broke up and she ended up having a kid with a guy that he was mates with. maybe that hit him hard?

his last fight with rasalev was a scorcher and he took some big shots. rasalev hasn't fought since, he also took big shots. maybe that was weighing on his mind. if he is struggling at that level, surely he wouldn't make it to the top?

then maloney pressurising him and being alone in london couldn't have helped. maloney didnt cover himself in glory after the death by asking the family for money. that was ridiculous and showed a lack of class and lack of respect for sutherland and his family.

sad story all round. top top guy was sutherland.

Livra makes some valid points there.

Darren was a perfectionist, he also was very upset but the damage to his eye which was caused by the thumb of his Russian opponent in the AM's.

I think he just wanted to please everyone, I think the last fight bothered him heavily. I wouldn't even be shocked if he read forums like this. Maybe he felt he couldn't be the best and depression can come from wanting perfection and being on your own away from your family with the woman you loved with your pal and building a family must of broke the poor lads heart.

Whatever his sexuality he was a charming character with skills and a personality that puts his SMW peers to shame.

I must admit i alluded to the gay rumors a while back in a post, i'm ashamed of myself for doing that cos i have no right to especially with him being gone.

    RIP Darren

he used to post on boxrec actually

i remember writing a long post about why i thought he wouldn't go further than degale and how people were overrating him and I didn't think he would be the star everyone thought he would be etc

i really regret that now. but i was just posting my opinion. however, if someone is close to suicide, hearing things like that being said about you can probably cause you to doubt yourself even more

one thing we can all agree on is that the lad had talent and the 168 pound division would have been a lot more interesting with him in it

I think being based in London was a mistake.

It's certainly not the place for a lad who's on his own and used to his home comforts.

I'm pretty certain that homesickness played a part in his overall mindset, and being the way he was wouldn't want to go back to Ireland for that reason, as he'd be worrying about what people say.

It happens all the time, young people move out of their parents, get in the **** financially or just don't enjoy it.... and instead of just going back home they get themselves in more debt or just end up on their own and fed up all the time within their four walls.
