I see them being very similar in level, either McDermott wins on points or Allen knocks him out.

Prime John McDermott (07-09) is a level above anything Dave Allen has currently shown as a professional. Big John was competitive with Danny Williams and an up-and-coming Tyson Fury.

Allen, on the other hand, was a punchbag to Ortiz, Whyte, and Yoka, handled easily by David Price and Frazer Clarke, yet competitive with Bosh.

I never said McDermott was a world-beater, but on his day and at his best, he was a good British-level fighter and probably considers himself unfortunate not to have become a British champion.

Heavyweight boxing, though, is what it is, with everyone outside of the elite extremely vulnerable to being caught and laid out.

Dave Allen was given chance after chance, especially by Matchroom, first as an opponent and then as someone they could potentially build up as he sold tickets and was popular. Each time, he blew the opportunity until Eddie would throw him in the last chance saloon, which he did against Webb, leading to the Browne and Price fights.

Now his performance against Bosh will lead to another roll of the dice for Allen, but IMO he was a better fighter 5-6 years ago than he is now. The shot that he landed on Nick Webb to knock him out, would have also knocked Bosh cold, but he was unable to set it or land a similar overhand right hand. Instead he resorted to out-hustling and old-manning Fisher to the point he simply outlasted him.

If Allen had dedicated himself when younger and not been mismanaged into the Ortiz, Whyte and Yoka beatdowns, which would have also dented his confidence, he probably could have possibly become British Champion, under the right circumstances, as he is a tough hard man.

But early on he was managed poorly, took a lot of damage, then eventually came to believe his own hype, especially in and around the Browne and Price fights, after having already blown the gift of a lifetime with the Lenory Thomas opportunities.

Time waits for no man, and for me, I think Dave Allen has had his time, and if he were to fight and beat Bosh in a rematch, it will be because Fisher is that bad, rather than Allen being that good.

It was the same with Kevin Mitchell, albeit at a much higher level; by the time he dedicated himself to the sport, his window had passed, although he did come incredibly close in the Linares fight.

Big John has a win over Tyson Fury and he would do a number on Bosh.
