says he doesn't want an out and out journeyman, as if Lovejoy s better than that. daft dave act has seen better days and im sick and tired of this bloke
I don’t mind him. Apparently that Russian was the most fearsome man on the planet (literally because he’s ugly) people fell for that. Allen nearly had him out of there a number of times. Just saying. Got a lot more time for him than I did a few years ago anyway. He looks better now.
It's very frustrating to see him pile 2 stone on between camps, which he then just about shifts, leaving him back where he was, not making any real progress. It's a shame, he's a good ticket seller at semi-British level, but he can't seem to keep his head out of the fridge. I see him and Pat Brown have started a podcast on the Matchroom channel, and I thought he came across as quite arrogant in that, which he doesn't normally on his own channel. Quite the contrast where Pat takes it seriously, is a proper athlete, and Dave seems to rely on his experience and make excuses for not being in condition. If I recall in his post-fight breakdown of Fisher II, Dave mentioned having to be careful he didn't do his beans early because he came in too heavy. Same old story with him, and I'm starting to lose interest in him, which is a pity. If only he could be properly dedicated to it for a year, and then retire into pundit/management work.
I generally don’t have a problem with world champions handpicking opponents after tough mandatory defences or unifications etc, nor where contenders have suffered a defeat and looking to ease back in. Or even where a fighter is jumping up a division and easing into the new weight class. As fans we can tolerate those sorts of “cherrypicks”. I don’t think Allen has really “earned” the right to handpick an opponent. Why doesn’t he show some ambition and set his sights on the British title? Jeamie would 100% be up for that fight.
You're not wrong but on the other hand you can't blame Allen for looking for easier fights every so often. With Allen's style even when he wins he can take a lot of punishment, and if he fought Jeamie TKV for example he may win but would almost certainly take quite a bit of damage in the process. If Allen wants an easier fight where he can take a paycheck without taking so much punishment I don't blame him; if a promoter is willing to put up the money and facilitate it then all the power to him.
Yeah fair points. I guess he is enough of a “name” to have that sort of bargaining power because Hearn knows he can use him to beef up any card and his fans will lap it up.
Joke fight as ''Lovejoy'' would get sorted out by Lovejoy from Titanic...he is dreadful. The White Rhino vs THE GASHI GUN...anyone? oh I should be a bloody promoter ****ing cracking little scrap oh yeah 50/50 sign me up.
Mate, people have been saying this about Dave Allen since 2016. It is what it is. I think Eddie Hearn makes his move in 2026. Johnny Fisher will be matched increasingly underwhelmingly in the meantime, probably on other Matchroom undercards alongside stablemates Liddard, Sains, and maybe Benn if a big fight gets booked. Allen will have his warm-up around February, then get overmatched again and lose. By the end of the year, both he and Fisher get cashed out, whilst the Bosh army quietly moves onto someone with actual longevity for the stable. It’s not cynicism, it’s just how the cycle works.
Just such a weird fight. Lovejoy is crap, brings almost 0$ to the table and is probably unknown to many in the UK. Surely you go after tkv who pre Clarke i'd rank in the not very good category.
Allen is likable but getting massively fat in between fights act is nonsense shows me he doesn’t truly care he could have bested Mak if he was in better shape and he nearly did
There’s no escaping the facts. I don’t think anyone in the sport has ever been given an easier lay-up to win a relatively major title than Dave had against Lenroy Thomas, and he messed it up not once but twice. Then a 3–0 Joe Joyce comes along and totally dismantles Thomas in a couple of rounds, which only underlined how much of a gimme that opportunity really was. Fighters like Dave very rarely change until the chances stop being presented, and at this stage he’s pretty much down to one last shot.
