Ben Pike, Robbie Patterson and Vera BertolaMacarthur Chronicle Campbelltown A PROFESSIONAL boxer knocked unconscious during a bout in Ingleburn on Friday night has died in hospital. Davey Browne Jr, a father-of-two, sustained significant head injuries in the 12th and final round of the match at Ingleburn RSL Club last week. The Campbelltown man was fighting Filipino Carlo Magali for the IBF Pan Pacific Junior-Lightweight title, which would have seen Browne attain a world ranking. Police released a statement overnight, revealing Browne Jr had died and a report would now be prepared for the Coroner. Browne Jrs legs were shaking in the 6th and 11th rounds of the bout after copping a number of heavy hits. John McDougall, the president of the Australian National Boxing Federation, said this was the first serious injury in NSW in 30 years. He said Browne, who was ahead on points before he went down, told referee Charlie Lucas he was okay to fight on into the last round. Mr McDougall also defended the decision for the fight to continue. People will say in hindsight the corner shouldnt have let him come out, he said. If the 11th round had gone a few seconds more there was a possibility he may have stopped it. Browne turned and looked at a bit of loose tape of his glove, took his eyes off his opponent, and unfortunately this whistling big right hand hit him flush, he fell down. He was out cold before he hit the floor. The crowd of 500 were quite distressed. Browne Jr briefly regained consciousness while being treated by doctors at the scene. Ray Wheatley, Australias most senior boxing official, was one of the three judges for the fight. It is such a terrible shock, Wheatley said. Only a few weeks ago I was the referee when Davey beat Tom Ford in Narrabri and he looked terrific that night. The boxer was in a critical condition after being rushed to hospital. He was part of a boxing dynasty that included his father David Browne and brother Tommy Browne, who also fought on the card Friday and is a two-time world title challenger. Former world champion boxer Daniel Geale took to social media on Saturday to encourage people to support the Browne family through the tough days ahead via a Go Fund Me fundraising page. Thoughts and prayers for Davey and his family, Geale said." Just pass a thought for his family and children he's leaving behind. Also pass a thought next time you go to insult a fighter, any fighter. RIP you warrior. Another name on the wall for those who have passed on fighting for us. You'll be missed.
Things like this happening make it hard for me to justify the sport as is. Especially letting children spar.
Why didn't they stop the fight in earlier when he was hurt in the sixth. His corner were to concerned with getting the win.
This is why the refs are so overprotective sometimes. Those fighters have to be protected from themselves and their corners.
