Here is a fighter that we don't hear much about probably because we all hate to think of the tragedy of his getting fatally injured in his title defense against Sugar Ramos back in March of 1963. Moore had defended his title well for the years that he was the champion and from what I read he was doing OK in his fight with Ramos until he was knocked down and struck his head on the lower ring rope. Anyone remember this fine little champion?

Davey Moore was a helluva guy -- a terific role model.

I went to a boxing writers' dinner and the attendent come over to park my car. I took a good look at him. "Aren't you Davey Moore?"

    "Yes," he said.

When I asked why he was doing this -- a world champion -- on a night he was being honored, he replied. 'I want my kids to know there's no shame in honest work. When I don't fight, I don't make any money. I have to make it any way I can."

How do you not root for a guy like that.
