David Avanesyan vs. Charlie Navarro & Ruslan Provodnikov vs. Jesus Rodríguez RBR

I don't think he was too worried about the risk of counters from Bolonti. He clearly didn't respect him.

 

Yeah, it appears they're doing this PBC style, with Provodnikov vs. Rodríguez as the main event despite being a mere 10-rounder and this one about to start being for a world title (interim or no).

I mean, sure, Ruslan is the reason most of us are tuning in but I still find that a bit disrespectful. Any version of a world title bout should always supersede a 10-rounder, no matter the "star power" of the participant(s) in the latter.

 

David Avanesyan vs. Charlie Navarro, 12 rounds @ welterweight

 

This is for the WBA interim welterweight title. Keith Thurman was promoted to regular champ when Mayweather retired. The super championship is vacant.

 

Round 1

Avanesyan is standing in place and dropping a level, peering up between his wrists at Navarro. Steady jabs by Navarro, but churning the air. Avanesyan is waiting, nice jab but very conservative with it, slapping a few hooks downstairs. Nice body shot by Navarro.

10-9 Navarro, mostly uneventful

Round 2

Avanesyan is curling himself up, head aimed down and to his right, and forcing the jab upward into Navarro's face. Counter jabs & hooks by Navarro, turning Avanesyan. Left hook whipped into the ear by Avanesyan leaping in. Clinch. Lead right on the body from Navarro, blocked. Avanesyan is moving his gloves around excessively, dancing in and out uncertainly, a little spring in his bent lead knee. Avanesyan keeps lowering his guard and then raising it just in time as Navarro jabs. Quick jab on the face and hook on the body dashing in by Avanesyan, both scoring loudly.

So far Avanesyan isn't striking me as the world-beater the rumors (mostly stemming from the Eubank Jr. sparring) make him out to be. :think

 

Errata correctional note:

The points deducted from Roberto Feliciano Bolonti earlier (both of them) were officially for the foul of "dangerous use of the head", not holding.

 

Oh that's right, Avanesyan sparred with Brook to help prep him for Chaves as well.

 

Round 3

Avanesyan is swooping in and jabbing only to cut & run as Navarro activates the lawn-sprinkler on him. Navarro fortifying his position but no longer forcing the issue. Lots of posing and blocked jabs both ways, little getting through flush and not a lot of work being done in earnest.
