Former three-division world champion Shane Mosley, who is 44 but has won two fights in a row in strong performances, will challenge David Avanesyan for his interim welterweight title on May 28 at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, Mosley announced on Saturday night.

A few days earlier, Mosley announced that he would be trained by legendary Hall of Famer Roberto Duran and that his next bout would be for a title.

Mosley said the fight will headline a CBS Sports Net-televised card that Mosley's promotional company, GoBox Promotions, will put on.

"I plan to put on a clinic," Mosley wrote on social media. "I'm not just gonna win. I'm going to annihilate him. In 2009 they said I was done. #Wrong."

Mosley (49-9-1, 41 KOs), of Pomona, California, won world titles at lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight and was considered by many to be the best fighter in the world after his career-defining first victory against Oscar De La Hoya to win the welterweight title for the first time in 2000.

In recent years, Mosley has lost to a who's who of boxing's elite, including Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. But Mosley said injury problems were partly the reason for some losses.

In 2013, Mosley retired following a back injury in a knockout loss to Anthony Mundine in Australia, but after nearly two years out of the ring, he returned in August and knocked out long-faded former two-division titleholder Ricardo Mayorga in the sixth round. Mosley had previously knocked out Mayorga in the 12th round in 2008.

Mosley followed the August victory with a 10th-round knockout of Patrick Lopez in December in Panama, where he connected with Duran, the national boxing hero of the country.

Avanesyan (21-1-1, 11 KOs), 27, of Russia, is largely unknown but he knocked out Charlie Navarro in the ninth round in November in Monte Carlo to win a vacant interim 147-pound belt, which he will defend for the first time against Mosley. The fight will be Avanesyan's first in the United States.

"I'm glad people know this is a real competitive fight," Mosley said. "It will be a challenge, but when I win, the world will know."

Mosley claimed that he had engaged two other welterweight world titleholders in negotiations, but they backed out before Avanesyan accepted the fight.

As bad as Sugar Shane looked in his last match, I give Avanesyan a great chance here.

Never seen the Armneian fight, his record looks bad though, I would guess he'll still beat an old man though.

This is why no one pays any attention to sanctioning bodies and their trinket titles anymore.
