Probably. His resume was weak and his abilities were overrated as well. I know fast guys often get overrated, but Jesus, even his speed was overrated. I remember reading a laughable article that claimed "Haye is easily the fastest HW since prime Ali". LMAO! He had fast single punches, mainly the right hand. The list of HWs who threw faster combinations than Haye is long. A 47 year old Holyfield did better against that ogre Valuev than Haye did.
Not to mention the absurd hype surrounding Malik Scott, who after he drew with Glazkov was going to take over the division and dethrone Wlad. Still to this day many posters here will tell you that all of Scott's losses were actually dives, robberies, the ref counted him out too fast, etc, and not real losses.
Haye was mostly impressing casual fans or newcomers to boxing. When Haye said stuff like "I unified the cruiserweight division, I was the best CW since Evander Holyfield" oldschool boxing fans knew he was full of sh**. Newcomers however nodded in agreement simply because they lack historical reference.
Haye would ... could .. and would .. then he could, but then he would be .. and could have been, eventually he would be the GOAT.
Haye was a very good fighter. Think the problem is people dont quite understand how hard it is to make that jump from cruiserweight to heavyweight. The momack win abroad pretty much shows he was a quality operator. Looking at his heavyweight cv...it wasnt really the quality of opponent but how he dealt with them. Ruiz/barrett/harrison/chisora we,re dispatched pretty brutally. I think the problem then was him and booth tried to be too smart for their own good against valuev and klitchko. Tried to win the fights with a masterplan due to their size. Still say haye would have had a better chance against klitchko if he forgot about strategy and attempted to do what he talked about in the build up to the fight. Still think essentially klitchko was just a bit too big and too good at using his advantages for him tho.
Haye isn't over-rated at all. He's very much derided for his lacklustre heavyweight campaign. Tyson Fury is the most over-rated heavyweight by a country mile.
David Haye is the only one to knock Dereck Chisora out who has a great chin and he did it in 5 rounds which is very impressive, he also wobbled Valuev and nearly knocked him out and he did it as a natural cruiserweight. Haye is not overrated, he is underrated especially h2h, let's see if another cruiserweight can achieve the things he did in the era of super heavyweights.
