Wlad-Povetkin would not be a bad match-up. Well, it's pretty clear this would be a one-sided affair for Wlad. But the division is empty, there's literally no-one of note who hasn't already faced one of the Klitschkos (or will face them), while Holyfield and Toney are too far past it. That's also why I'm putting some hopes in Helenius, there's not much else we can do anyways, but it's too early for him still. As for Povetkin not deserving a title-shot - of course he doesn't deserve a title-shot at this point, but who of the recent challengers has? Did Samuel Peter, Hasim Rahman, Shannon Briggs or Sosnowski deserve their title-shots? I think not...
Toney is clearly shot to pieces and horribly out of shape even for him based upon this performance. Thats the same Damon Reed who got blasted out in under a minute against Herbie Hide. The Toney that fought Holyfield could beat Haye but this version doesn't have a hope in hell.
I think you underestimate James Toney. If James Toney comes in at the shape he was in for the Greer fight, he could beat Haye. If he's 250lbs he will lose. Haye is quick, has power, but so was Sam Peter at the time. And Haye isn't a very good technical boxer, so saying he's going to outbox James Toney is just ridiculous. It's like saying Pascal would outbox Bernard Hopkins.
How is Toney past it when he hasn't lost since 2007? He's been on a win streak almost as long as Wlad. And the fight he did lose I don't think he really lost. He beat Sam Peter in my opinion and was robbed. He also got robbed against Rahman. Toney had the IBA title in 2008, but he's washed up? Do you realize that he beat Oquendo just 3 years ago?
He still looked amazingly slick in his last fight, when you consider he weighted almost 260lbs. Obviously he should lose weight when he fights top contenders, but even in bad shape, he didn’t lose a one minute of any round, when he last defended his title.
Oh dear, the main reason Haye lost to Wlad was that he couldn't get near enough to get a decent punch off. I don't think Toney would be that elusive.
Toney would hit him with counters when he attacks. After couple of rounds Haye would keep his distance, trying to pot shot his way to victory. He would win some rounds, lose some rounds and in the end Toney would KO him with a perfect counter.
The same bottom that Haye faced to get his title shot. The same bottom Valuev was fighting. The same bottom Holyfield fought to get to Valuev. The division is weak in general, but Oquendo was at the top of the division and Toney beat him for the title in 2008 for the heavyweight title. So if the title holders are the bottom 100, who should Toney face next? Haye right?
Toney is way more elusive than Wlad and has a much better chin. Do you really see Haye trying to brawl with Toney or outboxing Toney? I think if Holyfield couldn't do it, and Peter couldn't do it, and Rahman couldn't do it, and Oquendo couldn't do it, neither can Haye who never beat any of these guys to except for Ruiz.
