Prime-Prime I agree. Hell Toney struggled with Danny Batchelder in his last fight he would not beat the young fast hard hitting Haye. Now Haye by brutal KO.
Toney by late round knockout, Haye would get countered all night, the way he holds his hands, he better have a good chin, because he will be taking punches all night from Toney.
Actually, if James Toney looks good winning against Danny Williams, Toney - Haye isn't an unrealistic fight. It would be a great fight to see how good Haye really is, much more of a test than Hasim Rahman. I'd probably pick Haye at this point, but you cant write off Toney even at this age. Prime for prime it would be a hell of a fight, and Toney would win, but people shouldn't totally discount Haye.
I think Toney really found his niche at CW, and his fight with Jirov is one of his most solid performances. I choose Toney by UD.. I think he matches up really well H2H with most cruisers, IMO.
it would be a tough, more for haye than for toney. i say toney punishes him, breaks him down, busts him...and then knocks him out. haye is no joke tho, he will probably take povetkin out, simply cos povetkin doesnt possess the chin or defense of a toney. hayes power is legit!
Why, Toney has shown in the past a big problem fighting guys who are faster then him. Haye is bigger, faster and stronger at cruiserweight. Haye can box, and most probably against a guy like Toney he would. Whoever called him a slugger is an idiot, the guy was a world class amatuer fighter. I can definitely see Haye taking this out, unless he really has bad stamina problems, or if he gets caught with a lucky shot. I think some people are dramatically over rating Toney here. The guy got beaten by Thadzi and Griffin FFS, and would be fighting WELL above his starting weight of 160. His power would not be a factor, and he would have MASSIVE problems coping with the speed of Haye. If any of you think Haye is going to go to war with toney like Jirov, your kidding yourselves. Another classic example of people clearly over rating fighters who are no longer fighting in the division. The worst habbit hands down of people on this site.
The competition that Toney fought at cruiser, excluding Jirov were woeful at best. I would love to hear an actual analysis from some people here, as to how Toney is going to close the distance on a stronger, taller and faster opponent without getting his head taken off. Haye might not be able to KO toney, but he could sure as hell hurt him and deter him from coming in on him. TOney is a natural counter puncher, who has shown difficulty fighting opponents who dont come straight at him. Haye has the speed and skills to outbox toney, all it would take is a good gameplan. Very very winnable fight for Haye.
For one Toney is a natural cruiser. He played football in highschool at something like 200lbs. He just cut down ridiculous weight to compete at 160 where power would be very evident. At 200lbs the man has a neck as thick as Sam Peter. Haye ain't hurting Toney easily. We aren't talking about Mac or Mormeck here. Secondly, don't even begin to compare Haye's speed to a prime Roy Jones. Who in all honesty is the only person who has ever beaten a prime Toney decisively. Jones at that time had speed that was unreal. Prime Roy handspeed makes Haye look like a nobody. Plain and simple. Prime Roy in every catagory makes Haye look like a nobody. Third, Haye has his own issues with stamina and Toney would make him miss plenty. Even prime Roy as fast as he was had trouble landing flush on Toney. And Haye doesn't possess a quick enough left hook to get the job done. Right hands don't work on Toney because he rolls with them. You might touch him with a right hand, but you better believe his own right hand is coming behind it, and scoring clean. Fourth, Haye doesn't have Jirov's chin. Of that I am sure. It took alot of punches from Toney, plus a real beating by Moorer to deck Jirov. Mesi couldn't get it done. That leads me to believe Jirov has a better chin than Haye. So Toney wouldn't have to hit Haye all that much to drop him. What is ridiculous is you putting guys like Mac, or Mormeck or anyone else currently at cruiser next to the likes of Jirov and Toney. That is the biggest joke in this thread. Haye is a nobody next to those names. Infact I'd pick a prime Jirov to knock Haye out! Let's be realistic about what Haye is. He's a big cruiser who has decent handspeed and good power and some skill. I wouldn't say he is exceptional in any category and he has issues with chin and stamina. Both of those are serious issues when talking legendary fights or top level. Which he'd find himself in with Jirov, Toney and especially Holyfield.
I not only cast my vote for the All Time Great, James "Lights Out" Toney, which goes without saying. I'll take it a step further and say that "Lights Out's" late model alter ego, James "WBC Eliminator" Toney would also drown Haye in the "deep water." ...Nate Campbell style.
