It was one thing walking around the cruiserweight division with a right arm held back ready to throw bombs and a left arm hanging loosely next to the thigh, but I was pretty shocked to see David Haye doing it at heavyweight last night. I wasn't even watching the fight live (already knew the result, and then watched it on YouTube) and I was still expecting him to eat a straight right or a right hook at any moment. Scary stuff. One thing's for sure, he can't go around doing that against the Klitschko's. Just thinking about it makes me shudder. The guy really does know how to breathe life into a dead horse. The Heavyweight division is going to be pretty exciting in 2009.
I think his defence relies alot on him seeing the punches coming and using his head and foot movement to move outa the way. I box with a low guard myself and its ok when your out of range, but i can see the danger with Haye, he needs to tighten up when fighting i close.
I too would like to see Haye be able to take a conventional stance and box behind a jab. It's always good to have a plan B, if the first style isn't working.
The problem is that if the first style doesn't work then there won't be a plan B. Not if you've eaten a Klitschko special.
Because employing a guard means he can't see punches, reduces his mobility and his time to get out of the way.
Haye relies on his speed to get out of the way, but if he is throwing a "Hayemaker" at Vitali or Wlad' then it we be difficult to move out of the way of one of their long right hooks. He needs to be careful.
...this is key in why either KLITschko can beat him...and not the only reason. Haye should bide his time and fight someone else. His story will be over too quickly if he fights a KLITschko next.
Maybe just bring the guard up a bit wasn't it refreshing to see a heavyweight fight were bombs were being thrown, is speed will be his most effective weapon by none. Whether its Wlad or Vitali 2009 could be a cracking year for british boxing especially if hatton gets through mallinaggi fights pac or oscar.
when you're faster than you're opponent, you can keep your left low to bait him, then dodge the punch and counter it.
I was watching it live and lost count of the amount of fans that were frustrated with his reluctancy to bring his left guard up, making him susceptible to those right hands. Its a KO waiting to happen.
Its just how he fights, he likes to be loose, bait his opponent and get the counter right in... Also he likes the jab under the guard. I agree its nerve racking though..
