So anyone knows how good Purnell Gates is? I've never heard of him... http://www.rds.ca/boxe/chroniques/310469.html Edit: The fight will take place at 163 lbs.
Not good enough. Looks like another 1rd KO. I'm one of the few who thinks David should be brought along slowly, but this is a set back in terms of opponents. I've seen Purnell fight live a few times as welter weight, nothing special about him, maybe he can pull some cagey vet tricks, but he's won't be threat to David.
Well that sucks, but I wouldn't doubt he's had trouble finding opponents willing to fight him for not a lot of money. Pretty much my reaction.
Certainly seems like a step back in terms of quality, because while Gates' record isn't that bad, it's been accumulated against journeyman in the Midwest, and there aren't that many recognizable names on the list. Still, it's coming only six weeks after Lemieux's last fight, so it's good that he's keeping busy, at the very least.
GYM uses Lemieux to make money. He fights every 2 months. That's very good when you start your pro career but it's too much when you need to step up. It's too much because you never give time enough to serious opponents to prepare themselves to fight. Gates has 10 days left (!) before the fight. I hope he knows it since a couple of days... Anyway, Gates is not the guy to prepare him to world class opponents. I won't buy that fight.
Gym had already put Lemieux on that card even before David - Rubio fight was announce for April ! so we get what we get !
This had always been scheduled as a stay bussy fight for David....gym specifically said it was a stay bussy fight and that they were going to move him up a few levels after the new year. No one in Montreal or anywhere close was ever excepting anything other then a stay bussy fight so don't lets all get excited about this. The fight's less then in two weeks for christ sakes.
Never heard of him, like almost anyone on Lemieux's record. Can't believe he still fighting such guy. Lemieux is still young but he shoud target higher. Lemieux KO 1.....:tired
Never heard of him, but it's about what I expected on a week's notice. He's fighting Marco Antonio Rubio next year, so that will be a decent step up.
I was hoping for someone like Kassim Ouma, Ossie Duran, Matt Vanda somebody with limited offensive ability, but can take a punch and keeps trying through the whole fight. Even Marcus Upshaw who beat St Juste would've been a good stay busy fight. Camacho would wipe the floor with Gates.
