David Price vs Tony Thompson II set for July 6th

Perhaps, but surely the KO punch Thompson landed was something of a fluke. There was nothing behind it, Price's chin can't be that bad can it?

 

David Price is desperate to “put things right” against Tony Thompson after confirming his American conqueror has agreed to meet him in a rematch. The Liverpudlian heavyweight saw his unbeaten record demolished by 41-year-old veteran Thompson in a shock second-round stoppage defeat on February 23.

However, he will return to Liverpool’s Echo Arena, the scene of the crime that night, to meet Thompson again on July 6. Promoter Frank Maloney, who collapsed in the wake of the defeat, confirmed all terms have been agreed and he expects the signed contract to be returned in the coming days.

Price, 29, told Press Association Sport: “I believe Tony Thompson is saying the fight isn’t signed yet but he’s going to sign it because it’s all agreed and we’ve given him everything he wants. The fight will be happening.

“I’m pleased it’s sorted because it’s the only fight I want, really.

“I think he expected to be paid a lot more money than he got last time. He’s going to be getting paid well – and rightly so, because he beat me in the first fight and he’s in the driving seat.

“I’m just grateful he’s going to give me the opportunity to put things right that went wrong in the first fight and I’m thankful Frank Maloney worked as hard as he did to make it happen.

“It’s all in place and it’s now up to me to go out and do what I should have done in the first fight.”

Price added: “Massive credit to Thompson for taking it too. It’s a big opportunity for me to put right what happened in my head. I know it’s happened and it’s never going to go away, but as far as I’m concerned it’s the closest thing to me being able to go back in time and change what happened.”

Maloney told Press Association Sport he endured tough negotiations to secure the fight his boxer craved.

“Thompson has agreed all terms and it should be a done deal in the next couple of days,” he said.

“It wasn’t a straightforward fight to make, which is why it’s taken this long to get it sorted. It’s been very hard.

“But the fight’s made, he’s agreed all personal terms and it’s just a case of them signing the contract and sending it back. We’ve had an email from his team saying they’ve agreed to everything.”

Price had been in control of the first fight last month until a southpaw right hook to the ear sent him sprawling, prompting referee Steve Gray to stop the bout.

He easily won the vast majority of the 2 rounds before that?

Obviously 2 rounds isn't that long a period though so it hardly matters but Price clearly won the first round and was winning the second until the KO.

 

I thought that was a bit much myself. Winning one round doesn't mean you are controlling a fight in my book. I posted it for Prices comments more than the authors.

 

General opinion before the fight Thompson being picked as opponent was being ridiculed saying he was old,past it and after one last pay day.It was a huge shock as price was massive favourite yet now everyone says price was chucked in too early against a world class opponent and is being managed badly.Problem is people are forever complaining that fighters are protected and come along too slow and now price was pushed too quick.I really hope the truth is it makes price realise every fight isnt a walkover and he keeps tight and outboxes and outpunches thompson for a mid to late stoppage

 

Wishful thinking of a Kiltschko fan. Tony Thompson is old, out of shape and turning up for pay cheques. Yet was still able to KO Price. That doesn't mean TT has anything left, it means Price either had a very very off night, or he's chinny and a bit ****.

David Price will meet Tony Thompson in a rematch at Echo Arena on Saturday 6 July 2013.
When the pair clashed last month, two-time world title challenger Thompson caused a monumental upset stopping the 6ft 8in scouser in the second round.

Maloney said: “There was a rematch clause in the original contract, but it was still far from easy to make it happen. There have been a lot of nasty things said about David since the first Thompson bout, but this proves his fighting heart. Not many fighters have begged me to jump straight back in with someone who has beaten them. The fans in Liverpool have been magnificent to David over the last 12 months and I am sure they will respond and get behind the fight.”

British and Commonwealth champion Price’s loss against Thompson is his only setback in 16 professional battles. And a win will put him firmly back in the world title picture. Maloney will announce a top class undercard in the coming weeks.

Doesn't sound like it to me.

I think he will though, if the money is right.

He's probably pissing himself laughing right now, with a TKO2 win in the bag over a touted contender.... he'll fancy his chances of doing it again, then probably calling it a career and ****ing off.

 

Show me ONE clean punch Price landed to the head in the fight? You can't dominate a fight by not landing a single eye catching shot.

 

No way he'll be retiring if he wins again. He'll be in prime position to make even more in a showdown with Haye or Fury in a "Brits get revenge" match.
