Tua never had a weight or motivation problem when he was with Lou Duva. My contention is that he could have potentially still be undefeated if he had stayed with him. True, Tua lost against Ike, a fight that many thought he won. His only other two losses were to LL and Byrd. He came in 20 pounds more against Lewis than when he was with Duva, and was a plodding fighter with a bad haircut and left hook. I'm not saying he'd beat LL, but he certainly had a better chance if he had stayed with Duva. Against Byrd, he lost a massive amount of weight and came in depleted of energy. If he had stayed with Duva, he would have knocked out Byrd, similar as to what Ike did to him. Those are his only 3 losses. I think his weight and motivation would not have been a problem with Duva. Granted, if he were undefeated, he would have fought different competition. At that stage of his career, he would have ko'd Tyson and Holy. What do others think? Who would have beaten a prime Tua who was in shape, throwing punches n bunches, and was motivated?
Tua's biggest downfall has been his weight. It's affected his punch output, his motivation and discipline, and probably his power. A prime Tua gives LL a much tuffer fight. Forget Tyson and Holy. He's KOs them in the late '90s.
Even the 225lb version of Tua always had problems with consistant jabs and good movement, though. The weight doesn't help but it's not the only reason for his losses and some of his very narrow wins.
He's only lost 3 times! Had trouble with jabs, yes. But didn't lose to anyone but LL because of it. And an inshape, punches n bunches, 225 pound Tua makes it a toss up fight. A 245 Tua makes it one sided for LL. Lou would have found a way. As Manny later did with LL.
Don't understand the Tua bashing...he's one of the greatest fighters to never hold a belt....I wish him the best, if he wipes out Arreola I think he deserves Peter and to pick Peter over an inshape Tua is borderline blasphemous.......no skills? you people are on ****ing drugs.......
Tua has a granite chin and devastating power. He has zero head movement a non existent jab and isnt that imaginative nor hard to find in a phone booth let alone a ring. He can be outboxed easily by any box puncher with a savvy jab. Byrd hen pecked him to a UD. LL did the same. Tua had the right ingridients (chin + power) but he never had the dedication. His weight fluctuated constantly and he revelled more in his squat powerful physique and physical stature than he did applying himself to his trade. Shame as he could have achieved so much more. But since his loss to LL his career just seems to have nose dived with him popping up every now and then to remind us his still here. His litigation went on for years, and recently all his done is fight journeyman. At least he was staying busy for a period but thats dried up for almost a year again.
Interesting point..however I think it would be abit premature to give up on the guy....espescially with the current state of the HW division...I would give him an easy chance at Chagaev or Peter or anyone else but Wlad
He`s 35. Although he doesnt have an immense amount of mileage on him the window for opportunity for Tua closed a long time ago. Tua`s promoted by Cedric Kusher isnt he? Kushner these days has very little promotional clout. And certainly very little to upset the applecart at heavy that has always been dominated by King and now Universum with Vladimir.I believe he also has pending litigation against Vladimir for Tua`s shot at the IBF. Litigation seems to have followed Tua everywhere.
Best thing about Tua at the moment is that he's become much more of a body puncher. He used to head-hunt but now he likes to work the body too, and I think that more than anything could give him a chance to make waves in the division still. Sending those hooks up against much taller opponent could see them go sailing past against and against. A willingness to target the body on the other hand could pay big dividends.
All he needs is a jab like he used to use in the Am`s and some head movement instead of just falling in and waiting for the big left hook.
