1) I explained that I watched a different Baer fight. More importantly though, your attempt to take one fight to pretend that guys like Baer and Levinsky jabbed frequently and like modern heavyweights is :nut 2) Never said that ****ell didn't throw 3 jabs... Your thread was still ridiculous though.
We were obviously talking about the same clip I posted, but okay. I don't think they jabbed the same. Stylistic trends change in boxing. But no fighter is better than another just because they use some specific style. Also, boxing is moving away from the front foot weight stances of the 90's that Ali popularized in favor of more even distribution on both feet. So those modern heavyweight you're thinking of are no longer modern, and the jab style you're thinking of is no longer the present day gold standard you're thinking it is.
No, I'm pretty sure I had previously posted a youtube clip of a different fight where they crudely wail at each other like drunk sailors, with minimal jabbing.
I find it difficult to understand, how knowledgeable posters can watch the (limited, I admit) footage of Corbett... and in all seriousness argue, that he would beat someone like Tua. Is that really a likely result? I mean - honestly!
Chris Bryd did it, and to be honest, Corbett was more mobile and faster. Who says all posters here have limited knowable about Corbett? He can be seen on 4 films. 1 ) Fitz 2 ) Courtney 3 ) McCoy 4 ) Tunney Corbett took bombs from Joe Choysnki and Peter Jackson over many rounds. Both men were much faster and more scientific than Tua.
Would Corbett even be quicker than Tua. That's a valid question and one in find hard to determine through the footage. Corbett with an extra 20 pounds wouldn't look as frail. His style is wrong for Tua but his lack of aggression probably guaranteed his loss. Reminds me a bit of Oquendo more than Byrd tbh.
What do you mean by "more scientific"? Even with his limitations, Tua's offensive skills and repertoire are light years beyond anything I've seen in old footage. Modern combination punching is vastly superior to the "plan & pounce" methods common in footage of past greats and advances in footwork and head movement help slower boxers close distance, get inside, and get to their more mobile opponents more effectively.
At 20 years old Choynski was having his first pro fight. Corbett didn't take Fitz's left hook very well did he? Tua is around 75lbs heavier than Fitz was in their fight and a good 60 lbs heavier than Choynski.

More corrections 1 ) It was not Choysnki's first fight if that is what your inferring. A puncher is a puncher in his early fights. 2 ) 99.9% of the fighters could not take Fitz's hook, and he set up the KO with a quick feint, something Tua never did. 3 ) Tua was often fat. Not ideal for him in this match. 4 ) I see you avoided my point on Jackson. According to Siler, Jackson hit much harder than Jack Johnson. Corbett took it.
It was his first paid fight. Corbett was the instructor at his local AC, he was 2 years older and far more experienced.I have read the write ups of the Corbett Jackson fight after 20 rounds it became a bore fest.Jackson was nursing an injured ankle in that fight. Tua was 226lbs for Ibeabuchi and in shape ,that is 70lbs more than Fitz weighed the morning of his fight with Corbett . Don't you ever get tired of being made to look the fool you are?
At least that is something. It would be a legitimate criticism, to say that CorbettÂ’s legend hangs on looking good in losing efforts, and getting draws. There is however substance to his resume. However far gone John L Sullivan was, he was still the lineal champion. He secured his position as a leading contender by beating McCaffrey and Killrain, who had been the best gloved contender of the era, and the best bareknuckle contender respectively. Add these wins to his draw against Jackson, and he has put together a pretty impressive run.
