If it is meaningful, it's a 178 pound fighter against a 230 pound fighter .. Corbett didn't have the size or reach to keep Tua off like Rachman did .. I can respect what Corbett accomplished .. sometimes he impresses me on film like the five punch combo that put Fitz down and other times me makes me cringe but he certainly had something to him , speed , ego, a pioneer .. I just don't see him giving up all that size and strength but then again Chris Byrd did but Byrd is perhaps the most underrated fighter of he past twenty years ..
Just a little add on, to my previous post. Jeffries was about 218 pounds when he fought Corbett the first time. Corbett was 188. These weights were at a time when very few heavyweights, at the Championship level, carried any excess weight into a fight. They were usually down close to muscle and bone. I don't really believe that any excess fat would have helped either of them.
Looking at Jeffries on film, in all honestly, I don't see him being a prelim guy today, at least not without an adjustment period to learn how to box. Those low hands and lack of head movement would make him a bobble doll for as long as he could stand against Tua. Face first Sharkey put a hurt on Jim. I shudder to imagine what Tua, who actually knew how to close distance against all but the best, would do.
Your weights are right, but let's not forget Corbett had only 3 fights in the previous 6 years and hadn't won any of them ,he was also 33 years old ,pretty old for a fighter in 1900. Corbett would also be conceding about 40lbs to a prime Tua ,whom I believe hit harder than Jeffries.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Tua managed to **** this up and get out boxed for 3 minutes of every round. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Tua put Corbett to sleep with a left hook. What I do think is it would be a sleeper of a fight with Corbett making Tua look bad and pretty much running until Tua lands a massive left hook that ends it.
It wasn’t really until Dempsey’s era when boxing became more modernized and looks actually similar to what we’re watching today.
There is a miniscule chance Corbett pulls this off, Tua from the film we have seen would be one of the most skillful HW boxers of that time! Crazy to think about also one of the most powerful, durable, enduring and easily the strongest.
Corbett sprints around the ring for 300 rounds until Tua gasses, then pounces on him with his bitchhits for another 300 rounds. Finally, in round 601, Corbett lands a horrifically timed rear uppercut, sending Tua toppling to the canvas.
Nice! And, without any mention of Corbetts’s thong! I have no such discipline. A bit of hyperbole injected though. There’s NO way Tua is lasting beyond round 400.
