I agree with this assessment. 9 times out of 10, Tua would sleepwalk through fights and could easily be outboxed. Even the limited David Izon was cruising to an easy decision over Tua before falling asleep at the wheel himself. If Tua catches Jack early, I agree he could win by knockout. But, I wouldn't rule out Tua getting stopped as well. Dempsey may or may not hit quite as hard as Lennox Lewis, but, he was far more ferocious in the ring. If Dempsey fought the tentative Tua, that showed up against Lennox Lewis (in what should have been considered the biggest fight of his life) I would bet the farm that Dempsey wins by KO.
Dangerous fight for Dempsey. Tua would be the hardest puncher he faced, and certainly the fastest power puncher he faced. If Brennan, Firpo and that twerp Carpentier can rattle or drop Dempsey, then Tua might just put him through the canvas. All this hogwash about Lineal titles, especially a joke in such a racist era, means nothing to me. Judging on film, some of these clowns look absolutely horrid. And still, some of these horrid fighters hurt Dempsey badly (granted, such things still happen at heavyweight)… Dempsey would have to fight on the retreat. He wouldn't win by charging in and he wouldn't win by tying up. He would have to box and use footwork, often on retreat or moving laterally. There's not a lot of evidence of him doing this Judging on film evidence primarily, if a fit and ready Tua shows up (a big IF) he KO's Dempsey. Sorry, I would be lying if I said I saw it any other way.
Imagine the fighters back then taking clean shots from Tua wearing those old boxing gloves with minimum padding, there would have been quite a few fighters going to sleep and never waking up!
I think Dempsey gets off the canvas to win a decision. The longer the fight goes the more Dempsey lands his big shots and the less Tua throws his own. I could see Jack Dempsey getting a late stoppage based on accumulation and conditioning. Tua never had anyone in his face for 15 rounds the way Dempsey woud be. Anyway I don`t believe in Tua when the fight gets tough it really has nothing to do with boxing and everything to do with conditioning, desire, heart and determination. Who wants it more? Well it`s not gonna be David Tua.
What is this based on? When has Tua ever slowed down in the later rounds? Tua even past his prime never had a problem with conditioning and prime Tua was actually renowned for coming on strong late and knocking guys out R9-R12.
True dat last post. Also there were "two Tua's". The lazy one who relied on his left hook to salvage a lack of proper boxing effort, & the Tua that was in 2 of the most blows thrown ever recorded, the fights against Ike & Izonrite. It depends if the real "throwin' Somoan shows up. Still Dempsey likely wants it more, though besides that Dempsey could tire-breathing hard early against Willard-the muscle, power, chin & stamina of prime Tua may well be too much. Regardless of Dempsey's achievements in his era. It is not fair to presuppose that Tua would show up, but if the questions assumes this, it is very hard for Jack with Tua's physical advantages.
Not really. How bout his fight against Rahman? Did he come on strong and stay busy that nite? or night the title was in front of him (Lewis) he stopped trying to win the fight and went into a survival mode. After a couple of decent right hands by Lewis. His conditioning was certainly questionable. Unless you consider plodding around the ring and throwing one left hook every now and then a mark of stamina. I'm sure Tua could've fought 45 rounds in that mode. On the other hand Dempsey is not gonna leave him alone and give time and room.
