I used to see it that way, but when you study the fight reports, it seems that Galento was consistently countering Nova. He fought a smart fight, and put everything together, including dirty tactics.
Mcvey and Janitor why don't you listen to the live broadcast on you tube? http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=/&gl=GB#/watch?v=QghwSqAlKSQ
I started listening to it last night; I think boxing is great on the radio, even now. I got up to round 5, and will listen to the rest tonight. :good
Without wishing to drop spoilers, the interview with Galento after the fight gives us a bit of an insight. He is gracious in victory, and praises the defeated Nova, in stark contrast to his typical pre fight behavior. This lends weight to the notion that his behavior was a calculated ploy, to rile his opponents, and throw them off their game. He also pleaded with the referee to stop the fight in the last round, to spare the helpless Nova further punishment.
Yes, I noticed that!! I was also amazed that there were not more reference to the foul tactics famously described in boxing folklore. Tony did heel Lou in round 5 and round 9 but the only time the crowd responded with boos and jeers was when he slung Lou into the ropes during one of the mid rounds. Tony seemed to be ahead in most of the rounds but the rounds were more competative than I had been led to believe because as late as round 9 the commentator kept saying "galento seems to be the stronger of the two". Lou staggered Galento in round 5 having been down in round 3. Tony was cut on the mouth, ear and chin. Lou was cut on both eyes with the right eye entirely closed up. It sounded like Tony ground Lou down since it appeared they were both at a walking pace standstill for a couple of rounds before the end.
On a side note, Louis Galento is a bit of a morality tale. Louis had won his last three fights inside the first round, and two had been against former lineal champions. The portly Galento proved that he was human again!
