But Marciano did not fight guys from all eras. So how the hell did he establish that he would be competitive across all eras, nuthugger?
No era is ever that weak. There is always a huge talent pool of seriously tough and determined men, who only want one thing. There is always somebody capable of exposing any stylistic weakness.
Does that apply to other sports or only boxing and why? In MMA, for example, people freely acknowledge that the 90s were a weak era compared to today. No serious basketball fan would claim that Bob Cousy would be competitive with Allen Iverson or Chris Paul. It is only in boxing that the old time nutbag has set up shop and feels comfortable. We're going to run you nutbags out, make no mistake.
I have always acknowledged that we still have great fighters. its just that boxing is not a sport where each generation improves and everything is progress. Older is not always better and new is not always better. I think things on the whole are quite level, what we lose in skill is often made up in strength. fighters are on the whole are as effective as ever. I just just think generally that the special champions beat contrenders across the board. I dont think Alis contenders beat the klitchkos and i dont think Lewis's contenders beat Marciano. You seem to get angry if someone cant accept what you believe, especially when given thorough explanations and examples.
Would you agree, that Mark Spitz is one of the greatest swimmers of all time? I think you probably would. Yet his world record times from the 1972 Olympics wouldn't even have seen him past the preliminary rounds last year in London. So while he's a long way from being one of the best (i.e. fastest) swimmers of all time, he's surely one of the greatest of ALL TIME.
I undsrstand this argument but it just does not apply to getting hit in the face. Athletes do get stronger, Diets improve and we learn more about how the body works but a punch in the face is still a punch in the face. Mark spitz can swim as fast as he wants, in boxing a concussion is still a concussion! Thousands of years ago men fought with swords and spears, yes no match for a gun but let modern man take them on at their own game with swords and spears and it is a competative battle. You could argue todays steel is better than the old iron but you will still bleed to death if you got struck in the right place.
Chins dont get better but fighters gather more experience and toughen with seasoning as they progress through the ranks. inexperienced fighters can be outfoxed and make mistakes. It is entirely posible for an inexperienced fighter to be exposed early in his career then progress to a higher level never to be KOd again.
There was a time when every city had a dozen boxing gyms each populated by excellent trainers. That era is long gone. There are very few great trainers who can teach the sport the way it should be taught. This is why boxing is different from other sports. The finer aspects of the game have been lost.
There was a time when the reach of a sport in heavyweight division beckoned upon civilizations like Kazakstan and Belarus and Nigeria... that time was not the of the scrawny breadline 180 pounders of the 1930's, that time is NOW. If you do not agree that David Tua would bury, and I mean decapitate, Tommy Farr, you are an imbecile.
