So go ahead and name 5 guys that bounce off their toes for even half a fight. Not flat footed. Toes. Heel rearely touches the canvas types. Then, how many of them qualify as the so called super heavies?
The **** are you talking about? Other than Ali and a handful of copycats, that has never been the standard at heavyweight.
I'm 60, and have followed boxing thru my dad since the late 50's. Many on board here have more knowledge than me, but not many. My "you can't compare fighters from vastly different eras" seems to be a non-issue with posters. Tommo, I'll try to play this game from your perspective. A 2000 Lewis or Klit brother vs. a prime Dempsey or Marciano IMO would blow them out as you've said. A 185 lb. Patterson gets the same treatment. You seem to have a bias against Ali but he had the weight (and talent) to debunk your theories. How about a 1921 Klit bro or Lewis vs. a 2000 Dempsey? How about a 1952 Klit bro or Lewis vs. a 2000 Marciano? Tommo I'm sure (if you are a fairly young man) that by 2020-25 you will have a whole new set of HW champs that in your opinion, would destroy the Lewis, the Klits, and anyone else in the history of boxing. Bottom line? Comparing different eras of fighters is completely ludicrous!
There's no coach in the world who would tell his charge to bounce off their toes for half a fight. Longer fights are all about game plan, conserving and efforting when the situation requires. Jesus Christ All ****ing Mighty.
Even if the gameplan involves moving? Stick and move is one of the oldest gameplans. I have been ringside thousands of times and heard coaches telling their fighter to get on his bicycle, stay away etc. What are you on about? Zadfak has a point, when was the last big man who could dance? 25 years ago there were so many heavyweight Ali clones. Where are they now? I am not saying big heavyweights are not effective, they are, but their size has begun to restrict what they can do. Poor old Riddick Bowe would rather soak up shots than move once he got too heavy ...and it shortened what was a very good career.
They evaluate fighters from the shoulders up. Footwork and mobility is an issue that is a non-factor. But the thing with the bigger is better theory is where is the line drawn? Jameel McCline is way bigger than any old champ. Decent skills, in shape. Who's he beat? Does he win automatically? Anyone picking him and his 40 pounds over Mike Tyson? Now there's an interesting name to bring up in the bigger is better and the small guys can't cope argument. can a short 218-222 pounder like Tyson deal with the much much bigger heavies? How so? Oh--it wouldn't be quicker feet to position himself properly to punch than the stationary big guy, would it? The emphasis has just changed is all. But I guess you and I see that a big guy hitting a moving target is a different proposition than others do.
Mcline? the one who got stopped by Sam Peters? Sam Peters who couldnt stop James Toney a former MW? that blows your whole fascination with size out of the window :hi:
