: I have never understood this wishful thinking that so many fans have. Tua has not been at the elite level in over 5 years, yet there is still talk of he could "knock anyone out" and "If he trained hard enough". Toney could be great had he kept in shape and actually been motivated Briggs could be great had he kept himself in shape and not ballooned in weight Tyson could have been great had he trained properly and sorted out his demons Scott Harrison was a good champion who could have had lot more success had he only laid off the bottle I dont feel like listing more, but there are a ton of examples. wishful thinking means nothing, you go by the fights and the fighter. All the physical talent in the world can be wasted if the fighter doesnt have the right mindset. Tua never was and never is going to be anything but a HW with a big punch. Another "Could have been".
And a great chin. And power right through to final bell. And reasonable stamina when properly trained (watch the Ike fight). And an Olympic Bronze medal. That's more than most heavyweights have that are in the top 10 today, and should have been enough to win a belt or two. He also had promoters that absolutely raped him (and the new one still is by the look of it).
Yes, that great that he has all of that, and tell me again what he has done with it? Fighting sporadically against journeyman and not being in top shape since before the Lennox Lewis fight. Emphasis on "should have been". He through his own actions, mistakes, whatever, he wasted what he had. Its foolish to believe that after this many years he is going to amount to anything. He was a good HW, seemed to have the tools to be great, but never made it.
Lost 3x, all to elite fighters, including one top 3 ATG in one of said ATG's finest performances. And the Ike loss is very debateable. KOed several future and former heavyweight champs, including John Ruiz, who NOBODY except David Tua has ever had an easy fight with. He's a huge underachiever, but he's no bum. At his prime, he would have beaten more than a few ATGs more often than not. :hat
He sure as hell is not in his prime now, and whatever chance he had at getting a title, its gone. He is not going anywhere but down from here. He is already 35 and his activity level has been dismal
Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Arreola is his Waterloo. He'd be facing a fighter who comes at him, with a line to the belt held by Peter/Klit. Easiest way to a belt right now. I'm not saying Arreola is easy, but style wise a good match for Tua. If he doesn't fight Arreola, there is no good Plan B.
Agreed. Arreola is by far the best chance Tua has at the moment for a high-ranking victory. It's now or never, and it's looking increasingly like never. He needs to do whatever the hell he can to get away from Kutchner and sign with King.
Yeah, but I'm sure Tua is telling CK what and how much to negotiate the $$$s. Can't believe CK would negotiate otherwise. And remember, CK is a free agent promoter for Tua, going fight by fight. They signed for 2 years in March, 2008.
A classic under achiever, not in terms of skill, which were formidable at one time, but in terms of mental fortitude.

this is from his first pro fight: look how small he looks! so he is not that "big boned" after all... it's more what you put on your bones. This content is protected
