Anyone who saw Dawson's performance against Hopkins knew he was asking for a loss by calling out Ward. I don't know what Dawson's mindset was, but I think if Dawson had beaten Hopkins much more convincingly he probably wouldn't have called out Ward. My assumption is Dawson wasn't satisfied by his victory against Hopkins.

Dawson showed too many flaws that Hopkins exposed. He has this bad habit of ducking/down bending from the waist which makes him vulnerable to knock downs. Dawson was almost knocked down twice from Hopkins doing that ****. This is what Steward discouraged. Scully made Dawson use more shoulder movement which is ineffective, and makes it more difficult for Dawson to shoot the left-cross, especially considering that Dawson is a right-handed southpaw.

Hopkins had the most obvious strategy, which was circle to Dawson's left, and daring Chad to use his left hand more. If Dawson can create distance and throw the left-cross correctly this wouldn't be a problem. The problem is Scully made Dawson fight in this weird shoulder-roll stance and that everytime Dawson shoots the straight left he is out of position.

The Ward fight doesn't even need an explanation, I don't know what to call that type of performance, but I'm pretty sure Scully will say he did the best could under the circumstances, which means he wasn't confident Dawson was going to win the fight.
