http://www.ringtv.com/blog/2644/dawson_hires_steward/ Dawson's had four trainers now? And none can solve his reluctance and his switching off. But can Manny get him to at least pump out the jab all night? What do you all think?
Well i think it's a move that was needed...will it work who knows. I'm optimistic but we seen that sometimes even Manny can't get these kids to fight the way he wants. When he really attack Pascal he showed some real artillery but he's not got that mindset to carry it out all the time. I think it's a step up from Eddie who seemed to allow Chad to box within himself and pat his back. He's a very very talented guy but he could be yet another frustrating talent..i hope not!
He's in his late 20s now, but Steward seems very good with the psychology of fighters. Maybe he can get him to be more positive - tall fighter with good jab and solid straight left, but also with excellent combination punching. Maybe Chad will just never be a fighter at heart. There was no excuse for waiting nine rounds before trying to take Pascal out. And when he really hurt him he just stood there and admired his work!
Yep that's the frustrating thing but you only have to listen to him talk...he's not sharpest tool in box is he?. Get the impression from what i've read and seen he's quite happy to box within himself and not have pressure on him. That's why i like guys like Bradley they seem to have a totally different mindset. Chad looks like he be the lad that had all the skills but lacked the mental side to be a star.
Mandanda is right. Dawson is a very dim individual. Now, that doesn't always mean much in boxing terms but sometimes it transfers. He's been raped business wise several times and he can be forced in a different direction in his fights. He has all the tools to dominate, but mentally something is lacking. He has way too many lapses and can't adjust on the fly. He needed to fight with more urgency against Pascal if he was gonna fight that way of leading. Huge credit to Jean's performance, but no way should he be dictating the terms and style that fight was fought at. He also got to Dawson in the press conference by telling him "not to run". Pascal was the one fighting on the backfoot and fighting his fight getting off first, Dawson then in the post fight conference complained that Pascal was the one "running". That tells me a lot about Dawsons sharpness upstairs. That interview with Merchant afterwards told us a lot as well. I've spoken to John Sculley on facebook, he worked with Chad as a youngster and he confirmed what he all suspect. Chad doesn't take criticism well, he always needs an arm around his shoulder and he's not a very confident guy. If Steward is gonna try some tough love, then it won't last 5 minutes. Mayweather Sr. said Chad is mentally very weak and broke down in training camps. Now, Floyd Sr. is a very different character to Manny so we'll see. I hope it works out for Chad with Steward. I'm a fan and won't right him off after one loss to a very good opponent. He deserved all the praise he was getting and also deserves the criticism now. He needs a trainer who can make and articulate a strategy on the fly and can get his attention, lets hope Manny is that guy. He makes better adjustments from fight to fight he just needs to do it during a fight.
Fantastic post Slip I just remembered that interview...yeah Larry wouldn't take no **** off Chad who was crying like a 10 year old beat up by his lil sister. Sometimes there's dumb guys who can't read or write or have much of a normal IQ but put them in a ring with pair gloves and there naturals and take to things with ease. Chad just doesn't give me that impression..i read your post in Choi thread the other day and it summed up him in a nutshell. I really love watching him fight...it's nice to see a big athlete with skills and southpaw..just lovely to watch and when he does let them pistons go he's very hard to handle...sadly he's not got that mentality to go take it when things ain't going his way. But i put faith in Manny because he's one of the best and doesn't backpat guys. In Manny i Trust
He showed a lot of heart in the Johnson fight though. Maybe it was just a bad night for him in the pascal fight. He still has a good chance to beat pascal in a rematch imo.
The problem IMHO is thats he's not lacking technically, which is where Steward would help him, he's lacking in bottle, workrate, ring IQ etc. Those are fundamental flaws, not ones where a new trainer can come in and sort them out. He his what he is.... (IMHO!!)
Dawson definitely has heart, he hasn't got that girl in him like a Ortiz. I don't think there's really a problem with his ticker. His problem is a mental block and i think there's a difference. He's already had his "gutcheck" and come through, he was also pleading with the Doc to let him continue with a horrendous cut. I think he would win a rematch with Pascal.
