Dawson-Tarver rematch is a disgrace to the sport

Correct, people pay step aside money to avoid losing their belt. It would be completely counter productive to pay step aside money and vacate. Anyway, Johnson needs to stop whining. He had his chance. Diaconu has a bigger gripe than him.

So is Tavoris Cloud going to get paid $$$ to step aside here? I thought his IBF mandatory with Dawson was supposed to go down by February or something.

 

I suspet that Cloud is ''just'' the no 1 contender not the mandatory.Woods and Muriqi will fight in an IBF eliminator next year.Don't know if for the right to get Dawson or fight Cloud.

All he's proven is that he's willing to sacrifice to get a fight against an easy opponent, who he easily beat already and avoid a fight against a dangerous undefeated belt holder or a guy he won a competitive and controversial decision against and who is far more deserving of a rematch, or wait and see if he can land a potential PPV fight against either BHop, Kessler, or even RJJ, which if he won essentially sets him up for a showdown with Joe Calzaghe. This rematch against Tarver does absolutely nothing for him except pad his wallet a bit and tarnish his reputation.

Glen is right. Who is going to buy tickets to this fight? The first match was about as one sided as it can get. I mean, seriously, I know there was/is a rematch clause, but fighters usually don't go after them when they got their ass kicked in the first fight. This does nothing for either one of these fighters at this point.

 

This article, dated 10.13.08, says Cloud is the mandatory and Dawson has 90 days to sign to fight him (so until around Jan 13, 2009) according to IBF rules:

The article also says that Dawson was to make 800K for fighting Tarver, when he could have made a purported career-high 1 million plus for fighting Diaconu:

Yep,those things I knew,career high payday refused and Cloud mandatory.So it seems the IBF might just go against their own rules just to delay Cloud's opportunity.

Glen is right, but a contract is a contract. If Glen keeps winning and beats the Branco-Diaconu winner, then I think a rematch is inevitable.

 

Woods-Muriqi is for the #2 contender spot. Cloud-Gonzalez was for the #1 contender spot. I don't know that Cloud ever officially became the mandatory, but I just assumed he was and that Dawson will get stripped at some point. If his mandatory was actually due by January 13 though, the IBF would have already set up a purse bid by now and they haven't, so obviously the newspaper article about being due by then was wrong.

 

Is there any update on that, if the IBF will let Dawson fight Tarver while ignoring Cloud?
