Maybe but Hopkins has never done that. In fact, he's come up short in every close-ish fight he's been in.
:huh Why split decision? Can you predict how them 3 exact judges are going to score it? I never understand how people can predict a split decision. Better to just say 'I think it will be very tight with Hopkins nicking it'. As we've seen plenty of times before, you should never second guess judges' scorecards.
Well yeah of course but it's fair enough going for an SD in thinking that it'll probably be close and the judges could go either way :good
I reckon it be a very close fight, I can't see either fighter really asserting their dominance. Whoever the judges fancy really. Is it on HBO? I reckon Dawson by razor thin decision, possibly controversial.
Dawson is much bigger and stronger than hopkins. Hopkins look good for his age but his body is showing signs of age. He's not ripped at weigh in but dawson is just younger, stronger guy. So unless dawson has mental breakdown i see a him winning a decision.
I think Hopkins might just edge an absolute stinker by frustrating Dawson and scraping out just enough work to sway it. Hard fight to gamble on though, because I think a lot of it will come down to who judges it and what they like, and Hopkins style isn't always judge-friendly. I can't see an early finish, unless it goes in the rugby tackling direction again.
Dawson, like many others, has ALL the talent and tools to beat him. However Hopkins exposes the standard of boxing today. Guys who can't handle any sort of complex strategy, guys who gas, guys who can't adjust, guys who have no defence, guys who can't handle fighting someone with a defence, guys with no range, no timing and so on. Taylor should have won twice convincingly. Pascal should have beaten him twice convincingly. Dawson could also beat him convincingly. Tarver and Pavlik were a mess with no timing or distance or accuracy. I don't think Dawson previously beats Hopkins but the new Dawson apparently can box more, use his straight shots more, not be in such a rush. Hopkins is his litmus test.
Yet couldn't do it against Diaconux? Dawson is a case of fast hands, good combination punching, no brain. He was aggressive but ineffective in the two rounds Hopkins-Dawson lasted, and that largely contributed to the shoulder slam he committed. Hopkins never starts aggressively now, he works out his opponent's rhythm and then takes away their tools. Against Dawson he'd already removed his left hand and his normal strategy of boxing his way in. No one knows how the rest of the fight would have gone, but I suspect Hopkins would have frustrated the younger man all night and nipped a decision.
I think a big part of the reason that Hopkins is still enjoying success at his advanced age is that he has the kind if style that doesn't rely heavily on his physical attributes, although he is in great shape no doubt. He is all about the tactics and ring generalship, as Francis said - he completely disarms his opponents. Hopkins will read Dawson within the opening few rounds and win 7 or 8 clearly in my opinion, Dawson just doesn't have the ability to beat Bernard.
