Dawson may of just escaped his first loss by fighting Johnson instead of Cloud. Then again if Dawson fights Johnson the same way he did last time he'll lose anyway. And does anyone think Woods has a chance against Coud.... he's a bit basic but he's strong, powerful and very very hungry.... he may pick up where Pavlik left off when he got beat by Hopkins.
This is true, But Dawson asked the IBF for an exception so he could fight Johnson and then Cloud, they refused. And Not only HBO but no one was interested in Dawson vs Cloud.
I read that bit. None of the networks seemed to want a Cloud fight. And the IBF wouldn't give him an extension. Dawson was willing to fight Cloud he just wasn't going to give up an HBO date and money to do it. Smart move on Dawson's part.
Could have been, but lets keep in mind that Cloud is 1 green and 2 unproven. So it also could have been a total ass beatting with Cloud looking like another ABC fraud that got a title shot. Networks are becoming less and less willing to take those kinds of fights and that is a good thing, guys should have to prove themselves to get title shots. One win over a shot fighter that lost 2 fights in a row and his last to a damn near 50 year old fighter that hasnt fought in 3 years and only one is six years.
He had a rematch clause with Tarver and he's taking on a guy everyone claims got "robbed" against him. I guess vacating the belt was a smarter option in this instance.
Everyone says "Rematch Johnson! You got a gift!" so he rematches Johnson. Now everyone is saying "You should've taken on Cloud!" In other words, Chad Dawson can never win.
Had Dawson beat Tarver in the fashion HBO anticipated then Dawson would be fighting Cloud as a "showcase" fight, no doubt in my mind. (They would have signed that in a minute) Instead they are left w/the only real blemish on Dawsons rep, which IMO is the best move anyway, Johnson. good move.
I'm sure Decebal and others of that ilk will cruise by in a show of nostalgia to accuse Chad of ducking Cloud to fight Johnson. Dawson and his team have been smart to follow the TV exposure rather than fight off-TV, regardless of the actual purse or belt involved. What Chad needs is a convincing win in a meaningful fight on a major network, and the guy he supposedly has been ducking gives him that opportunity. I'm also happy for Johnson to get another solid payday.
