Dougie, thanks for this thread of Walter Cartier, a fighter who I saw many times in NY.When i first saw Cartier i thought he might be middleweight champion one day, but that was not to be. he was a sharp puncher and intelligent fighter but lacked the chin and ruggedness to be a champ. His best fight that I saw him was against Pierre Langois in 1952.the bout was a draw. But he was stopped by the better guys such as Kid Gavilan, Bobo Olson, Joey Giardello etc. Keep those threads coming D...b.b.
Seeing this thread about Cartier brings back this incident at the ol' Garden before his main-go with Giardello. I was in the dressing room with a bud who was fightin on the undercard. Walter was a very intense guy -- strapping shoulders and chest -- trained religiously under the watchful eye of his twin brother at Stillmans Gym. He was an orthodox, stand-up boxer, with a solid right hand. And you could see, with his brothers encouragement, he believed he could beat Joey, and vault into the title picture. He was gettin' his game face on. In deference to it being Walter's big shot, the room was hushed. Suddenly -- CRASH! -- the door burst open. It was Giardello in an outrageously expensive camels hair coat tied at the waist -- cigar in his yap -- with an army of goombahs. All noise 'n commotion. Joey strode over to Cartier, whos mouth was open, and gavem a RESOUNDING slap on the back: HIYA DOIN', WALTA?" The blood drained from Cartiers face. The TKO in the first round was a formality; Walter lost it in the dressing room.
great story john...stuff like that i love hearing. the place where i took them pictures was here... http://www.mcny.org/ fantastic place....and thats a huge stand showing those pictures, maybe 7-8 feet high... if you're ever there stick your head in, its free to go in. i was just raging i didnt have a good camera with me in there.
jg , great story.Handsome Walter was a sensitive aspiring actor..If Giardello burst into mjickey walker's dressing room , Mickey would offer Giardello a shot of Irish whiskey. .b.b.

The Gavilan fight was probably his greatest effort. Cartier had not been beaten in years and faced the reigning welterweight champion. He was ahead on two of the scorecards when disaster struck in the 10th and final round as Gavilan showed his greatness by putting everything on the line in order to score a stoppage.
