Ahmed Abaa Elbiali vs. Guillermo Rubén Andino, 10 rounds @ light heavyweight

 

Elbiali - best remembered on the world stage for his unsuccessful challenge of Jean Pascal in 2017, his only professional loss to date - really needs to stop 33 year old "La Joya" here if he still wants to mount a serious contention run. In his nine losses the Argentine has been stopped eight times.

 

The chiseled Egyptian still possesses a nice heavy straight right upstairs and uppercut on the body - utilizing both to break down Andino today. He did exhibit signs of rust in terms of putting everything together for the finish and not getting hit with nonsense overhands in return, but in fairness it has been 17 months since he last saw action.

 

The American Pharaoh says he wants to be more active, blaming "the business of boxing" for his multiple year-and-a-half layoffs. He's opening to fighting anywhere - the US, Egypt, Dubai. He calls himself a "young-ass 34" and wants to continue in the sport until he's 54 body willing. He clears up a misunderstanding where the interviewer erroneously quotes him (she claimed he doesn't like to get kayos) and says he talked about wanting to get in rounds and give a boxing lesson heading into this contest because he wanted to show off his skillset during the rare TV exposure, but he doesn't begrudge the stoppage coming in due course - particularly since Andino was a "survivor".

 

Apparently this was a historic event as Kawthar Halbi becomes the first Arab female to promote a boxing card in the Muslim world. Pretty cool. (nice looking young gal, too)

 

Williams Rafael Flores Betancourt vs. Froilan Miranda Saludar went the distance in the co-main event; that's unexpected.

 

...from the looks of it, that was a wild brawl, with Saludar getting the nod.

 

3 zip Elbiali before the KO4, btw, couple of knockdowns. He took a round or two warming up and fine tuning location with his jab - but every time he scored with a power shot (especially the straight right) it got a big reaction from Andino. The latter spoiled like mad, and received multiple warnings from the ref for his many stalling infractions: grabbing the jab arm of Elbiali and hanging onto it, headbutting into his chest, purposefully entangling arms with him to jam him up, landing a cheeky left hook on the mush during a break, etc.

Highlight reel finish, which Andino bizarrely seemed upset about.

Elbiali ties with Radivoje Kalajdžić and Yamil Peralta for second fastest stoppage of Andino (Lenier Peró has them all beat with a TKO1 blitz)

 

Crazily enough, the 42 year old Pascal is still active - he fought as recently as eight weeks ago - so that could be a goal for Elbiali to work towards, getting that one back. Probably the single best path to boost his name in one fell swoop.

It would necessitate a jump in weight chasing Pascal to cruiser, though. Be a good "name" win but wouldn't really contribute to his ranking at light heavy (where he definitely ought to campaign).
