What UK rights? What major sport has seen the rights go to tender? Remember they launched in the UK with the plan to bid for epl rights but they never went to tender due to covid.
NENT Group is in the process of acquiring sports rights to Viaplay. Soon they will announce even more sports rights to Viaplay UK. I'm well aware that the big rights are hard to acquire, but can we agree that DAZN UK should have some more content soon ?
Viaplay retails for around £5 a month in European markets. I doubt many sports are added to the UEFA Qualifiers and various Scandi sports at that price.
Viaplay have secured NHL and MMA rights to follow on from package of ice hockey, skiing, volleyball, ice skating, handball and athletics.
I agree. You can't grow without more rights but it seems they are content with just waiting it out. I can't imagine the break even subs required is too high but I agree it was odd that in the US and UK the sport they decided to go with when launching was boxing. It's not that the big sports are hard to get its more those rights haven't even become avaliable yet. A streaming sports service even at the best of times is still risky just because sports rights are only held for a few years and then someone else can come in with more money and suddenly those subscribers are gone. How do you forecast and come up with long term plans when there is no guarantee acquiring rights?
I completely agree. Sports rights are only on loan and they may change owner lightning fast. It is a difficult market. That said, I'm disappointed with DAZN UK. Had expected a wider range of different sports at this point.
Outside of fight fans do DAZN actually care about UK growth because the perception at the moment is they don't. Scotland football games would have been a good win for them. Did they show any interest in England games. It's quite unbelievable they still haven't added any new content. Bit crazy that Viaplay will come into the UK and from day 1 will offer sports fans more content than DAZN.
DAZN UK must surely go balls deep for UK Netball, perhaps Squash and pile in to take US Burger Eating from BT Sports. I am not joking about the latter - all the contestants had a walk on introduction and stands were erected full of fans. War Chisora entered then withdrew because there was no PPV Loot for him. This content is protected
I remember DAZN describing itself as the sports version of Netflix. I would like to predict that Viaplay has a serious opportunity to become the sports version of Netflix.
This content is protected Biggest fight ever according to Eddie and it won't even do globally more than UK PPV sales on Fury. No way we have 250k subs in the UK if they hope worldwide this only does 900k
Seems fairly low just for US alone, let alone as you say 200 odd countries. US, Australia, Canada, US, Japan etc. They keep banging on about 250k subscribers in the UK, that just doesn't add up if they hope for 900k views worldwide.
Viaplay have got the rights to four years of World Cup and Euros qualifiers ( England not included ) from 2024. They’ve already beaten DAZN and they haven’t launched yet.
I know that in the near future they will add even more rights to Viaplay. Comparing Viaplay UK to DAZN UK is a missmatch. Why are the owners of DAZN not in the process of acquiring rights to DAZN UK ? Is all the money spent on Eddie Hearn / Matchroom ?
