The ultimate pay per pudding - has put his hands deep in the pockets of all those PPV mugths and helped himself to well over £50m. Yet they never learn as wise Chinaman said - fool and money easily parted.
Dazn' problem isn't the amount they've paid to Matchroom or golden boy, or the approach of Eddie Hearn getting up some people's noses. It's timing, namely the point in the business cycle when this once in a generation shitstorm has struck. If it had happened in the early nineties it may have seen off sky sports before they ever really got started. They overspent to acquire content because that's what you have to do as a new entrant into the market. They priced cheap because again, that's what you need to do to acquire market share. Now suddenly they have zero growth prospects and massive commitments which are going to bleed their cash reserves dry. It's not through some fundamental flaw in their model or execution thereof, it's just one more of many ripples from this tiny pathogen crossing the species barrier...
Valid points but i still maintain that they weee struggling before the pandemic. Their entire business model was dependent on landing the biggest names in boxing and the biggest names Stateside constantly knocked them back. They reneged on some of the early pledges such as the subscription price.
They backed the wrong sport, probably as it was all that they could muscle in on. Boxing just isn't popular in America, hence why they had to try the YouTube route. There just aren't many fights if any that Americans would buy into massivley. They backed Hearn but i think they failed to realise why he has this cult following and that the American market is a completely different sell. Hearn has failed to deliver anything of note yet in America. The AJ debut was a disaster, his prized asset is basiclaly a bit of a joke in the market he wants to take over. Not saying they are dead but its been a bumpy start.
Yep my thoughts exactly. Another mistake he made is paying boxers like Maurice Hooker and Tevkn Farmer inflated purses which gave them delusions of grandeur about their worth and appeal. The pandemic might actually help in bringing these purses back down to earth.
There's a lot I could say about their business model and the reasons behind picking Boxing but suffice to say there's method to what looks like madness.
I think its quite quite clear what the method was. DAZN have built good relationships with American sporting bodies as they have alot of good European rights and were hoping to build a brand in America to get in on the NFL/NBA action over there.
They were planning to move in on the UK Premier League market in the next couple years so this will no doubt be a huge hit to those plans. When you’re competing with Sky, Amazon and BT you need plenty in reserve to insulate against these type of disasters.
Just the boxing...turned over 82 million last year with 11 million profit.... 60 million in reserve Hearn could literally pay Whyte v Povetikin to fight in his back garden
Hearn put them out of business, the man knows nothing about boxing and burned through a billion on bum fights
He kept telling everyone "I have a billion dollars" Then he failed to sign such A listers as Adrian Broner and started putting on British domestic level fighters in featured spots in america The man is an idiot
The man is far from an idiot. He had signed a big contract over a number of years, if imagine with targets and conditions in place. Nobody is just going to hand somebody 1billion.
Well done bomb squad, China, and covid 19..... time for Eddie Hearn and the bodybuilder Joshua to beg Al Haymon for a contract.
