A few weeks ago I asked this question : Will DAZN still be "the home of boxing" in 12 - 18 months time ? The coming weeks will be hugely entertaining for the rest of us, but probably not for Eddie Hearn or Frank Warren
GBM and Top Tier seemed to get the DAZN deals to fill the gap left as Matchroom reduced the number (and quality) of their domestic cards and help pad out that ‘200+ fight nights a year’ or whatever it was they were plugging. Warren has come along and filled that gap with higher quality, and better viewed shows so probably less need for them now. Signs were probably there when that last GBM show got pulled from the schedules a couple of days beforehand and ended up somewhere else obscure. Also seems to be fewer of those low-budget US club-level cards on DAZN the last few months, I wonder if a few of those deals have expired and not been renewed.
Are they going scorched earth and sweeping up every major player? My oh my, no wonder Eddie's bum has been flapping recently.
If this is true, how are they keeping everyone happy with 12 dates per year on Paramount? Will this become the PBC 2 with everyone incredibly inactive. If so, this is nothing to celebrate. Boxing will die with so few shows.
They’ll certainly manage more than 12 dates a year - they’ll have knocked out four in six weeks by early March. I wonder if they’ve fast-tracked expansion plans since the initial launch, so are burning through these 12 shows as quickly as possible to then re-negotiate a bigger deal (or deals?) with Paramount, Netflix, ESPN, Sky or whoever.
Zuffa Boxing isn't just something that suddenly launched. They've been working behind the scenes on this project for at least 2 years. You don't need to worry ! They know what they're doing
Anyone remember the 'Gang of Four'? It was 2013 when Frank Warren, Frank Maloney, Ricky Hatton and Barry Mcguigan formed an alliance to counter the exclusive partnership Matchroom had with Sky Sports. There was a famous photo of them all holding a Boxnation t-shirt together. Will we see history repeating itself soon? Boxing promoters banding together on a modern boxing-centric channel in response to a new, modern powerhouse taking over the scene, ultimately ending miserably? Mad to think what's happened to the promotional scene since 2013 and the changes we've seen. You don't hear as much from Dennis Hobson, Mick Hennesy, Kalle Sauerland or Barry Mcguigan (as a promoter) these days. Ricky Hatton, sadly not with us, Frank Maloney..... We'll, we know what happened there. Ben Shalom arrives on the scene, then Turki, then Dana White. Sky Sports step back, BT/TNT Sports come and go. DAZN launches. And it looks like some of the biggest changes are coming. What a crazy sport boxing is.
Going forward, Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren are both going to have to adjust to a role where they are no longer at the top table. Hopefully this means they both concentrate on arranging good solid UK cards !
