DAZN can’t afford Whyte in a decent level fight. SKY PPV has made him too much money. 250k views on PPV (bottom end figures) x £19.95 is just shy of 5 million quid. DAZN needs 625k subscribers at £7.99 to make that much. They’ve got about 250,000 max at the moment. Why would Whyte take the risk with DAZN when the risk with SKY PPV is tried and tested? He’s not an idiot, he knows SKY’s reach is so much greater. Then consider how many subscribers they need to pay AJ atleast £25 million a fight… it’s unrealistic.
Said it the other day, he’s overestimated his own popularity. He needs his weird cult following more than ever now otherwise he’ll fall flat on his arse.
Quite. I subscribe to Sky Sports as anr when. £30, and you can share your login. So £15 to watch test cricket. Also if I was inclined F1, Premier League, Lions Rugby etc. It isn't even close to value
Also AJ- Usyk will probably break PPV records. I can’t see AJ thinking you know what I’m off to DAZN.
I fear you're right, but the numbers aren't quite that insurmountable. 20% of that is VAT, and there's no way Sky and Matchroom aren't taking a cut of the fee either. I'm no insider - is their cut more like 2% each or 20%? - but even making a conservative estimate, Whyte will have seen 60% of the number you quote. Still a huge payday, obviously, but lowers the barrier for DAZN.
I went public on here to offer the zone fair warning that I simply would NOT tolerate a price hike above £2.50 per month. This of course being the figure which represents fair value for two canelo fights per calendar year. In return they have chosen to publicly insult my family and I with this heinous piece of grandstanding by jamming the price up to £7.99 per month? My subscription will be cancelled the moment I return from my family holiday on the north coast of devon.
Apologies been busy. For what it’s worth ‘y two cents is that it’s a fair price. The standard of cards to a boxing fan based from the Warrington card and Fowler vs Smith card is better than that was on Sky sports. the build is going to be slow and steady with Dazn . It’s by no means a sure bet. However if it works it’s going to be a must have app for any sports fan. the US market is being driven by PPV for the time being and I think matchroom will keep putting on great cards there and the schedule for the rest of the year will be decent but if other promoters don’t want to link up it’s on them. Pretty sure hearn is going to focus on new markets this next 12 months and if we end up getting cards across the world at £7.99 it’s the best there is to offer at this stage. Currently in the UK now where has better boxing content
The problem is, it may well be the best boxing content in the UK but at pretty much one show a month it makes these cards sort of “discounted PPV”. In October I’d be paying the £8 solely for that card and nothing else. OK Whyte might roll over a pudding in that month too but the rumoured opponents and rest of the card aren’t great either. You said slow and steady but the price increase has been sharp and quick. It’s probably the absolute ceiling price for boxing content in the UK per month, especially without Joshua.
Good post Its a shame as i wanted to get behind this platform I can just about live with waste of time fights on normal TV but wont tolerate bad to average match making on a monthly sub This whole everybody releases an app bubble is gonna burst soon Add it all up and your paying a fortune to watch all content
That’s like asking who the tallest dwarf is. There’s only really Warren as competition and he has been abysmal for longer than I can remember. I’m not going to pay just because the competition is terrible. I’ve been in favour of DAZN and would be willing to pay their price if the content is good enough, but right now it is nowhere near and there are other things to do on an evening than watch people talk about how great Conor Benn is. Looking at their schedule right now is like looking at an empty shelf with a tin of beans on it.
Sky will fight back and be a good platform still. Fans will be having to pay £8 more to see every fight.
