Worth noting that if you are with Plusnet you get BT Sport for £10 a month via the app. I do get the feeling DAZN taking over BT is doomed to fail if they launch/hike prices sharply. They need to think of what drives subscriptions and what does not.
Plusnet and EE are owned by the BT Group but operate as separate businesses from BT Retail as competition authorities demand. There's every chance DAZN could inherit the deals with companies like this and choose to continue them; there's even every chance BT Sport could continue to exist as a brand under other ownership. Most companies in the Virgin group are not owned by Virgin, they are joint ventures with a brand licence of some kind; could see the same happening here.
Thanks for the info mate, strange coincidence that I've been thinking about resubscribing to BT this past week and then see your post, Plusnet is my Broadband provider so that's the £20/30 BT Sport sign up fee dodged as well as 50% off the monthly sub as far as I can tell. Cheers !!
But look at the example of DAZN Italy. Soon as they won pick 1 Serie A rights the subscription jumped to €29.99 from €9.99 for all customers. DAZN Germany increased the subscription for all customers as soon as they won pick 1 of the bundesliga. If you look at them two examples I see DAZN UK being exactly the same if they take on all existing BT sport contracts. They will be paying way more then the brands do in Italy and Germany for the content they would take on. Amazon prime France increased there price soon as they won 80% of ligue 1 coverage for all customers. Alongside the €5.99 membership customers who want to watch ligue 1 now have the added price of €12.99 on the subscription price. This was on a deal they managed to get for cut price €275m per season. Now imagine what kind of price any UK OTT provider will have to charge customers if they won pick 1 of the premiership for the numbers to add up. It's not gonna be pretty! I just don't see how DAZN could keep the £7.99 price if they take on all current BT Sports contracts without bleeding cash! I read that BT sport could only make profit once it reached £25 per month. Good insight here in regards to DAZN Italy https://www.ampereanalysis.com/insi...first-can-dazns-landmark-deal-in-italy-add-up
I don't think they will keep all the BT Sport content. They don't need all of that. In regards to Italy and Germany the key words are "pick 1". Most subscribers to sports Live sports services are football fans. Exclusivity to the top games will always allow manoeuvre on price as football fans whether it's through tickets or watching live from there living room want to watch the best games and generally will pay for the privilege to do so. The Serie A deal wasn't even just pick 1 it's exclusive rights for seven out of ten fixtures per match day as well as 3 "non exclusive games. That price increase to 29.99 euros is more about the deal actually having the impact to make football fans ditch sky italia. That fan even at 29.99 will likely be paying less that what they was paying with sky italia and I suspect many would be content with 7/10 exclusive games every week and not feel the need to also have sky italia. They don't have that kind of content even with the BT content to do something similar as what BT Sport carry isn't premium enough to give sky sports subscribers the option of ditching sky sports. Basically pick 1 of domestic football is king. Whoever holds those rights basically becomes #1 Just look at this quote to see how important Serie A rights in Italy and why they went so big to get the exclusivity. https://www.sportspromedia.com/opinions/dazn-tv-rights-eleven-sports-italy-germany-uk-data-strategy/
Exactly this. What it does do is buys DAZN a serious seat at the table on the next round. They will shed any content that doesn’t drive subscribers. Eventually DAZN will be in a place to approach the premier league with a deal to essentially buy rights to the UK and the rest of the world or markets they have no deal of note in as a bonus. The premier league in turn would not have to lift a finger to sell rights in Brazil for instance
DAZN Brazil is not in a great place. DAZN gave back the rights to Serie A two years early. Also gave back rights for Copa Sudamericana two years early. Looking at what rights they currently hold in Brazil it more looks like they will be exciting the market.
I wonder what will happen to people (like myself) that have BT sports through EE. I love it for the UFC so will be gutted if I lose it. Guess it will save me £15 though.
Surprised they went so big on Serie A in Brazil. Domestic rights are key. Japan there growth came from obtaining j league rights. Germany Bundesliga, Italy now Serie A. Spain I see they do have F1 and international football but again eventually they will need La Liga for major growth. European countries especially is all about domestic football. Its why sky losing the CL didn't really hurt them (actually saved them over 2 billion) as premier league is king. That CL deal must be the one that really made BT wonder if it was really worth competing in the sports broadcasting business. They spent billions on exclusivity of the #1 elite footballing competition in world football and that exclusivity didn't move the needle.
DAZN may get asked to keep them offers towards EE customers for example in any sale as part of the deal from BT.
If that's true then they need to get it sorted ASAP, big loss of potential loot. Again it's early days etc. but as things stand I really can't see how Matchroom are making anything but losses out of moving to DAZN so far. Either that tweet is wrong or the bars are showing it illegally which would be extremely risky and stupid if caught, original tweet is likely BS
