I'd be interested in @Trafford 's point of view here on how big a thing pub viewing is for British boxing. I'd only go to a pub to watch a fight to avoid PPV fees. I find it difficult to picture too many pubs shelling out for a new licence to show Parker-Chisora II or Whyte-Wallin. On the other hand, if DAZN got Usyk v Joshua II…
Sky send the Sky Police around the bars and I have heard of fines up to £25k dished out in court. The owners of bars who do it illegal now ban all Sky Sports staff from entering the premises and they are trespassing according to the signs outside. It will be exactly the same with DAZN but not sure if Eh Day has recruited any staff for his Matchroom Metroplitan Police Force yet. They do need to get a deal done as a starting point as there are bars out there who will pay for it.
To be honest the revenue and actual viewing numbers from pubs is minimal in the grand scheme of things. It’s different for PPV as the pub pays a flat rate to broadcast it. They already pay the licenses to show Sky sports etc. I think at some point DAZN will look at it if it drives a revenue and brings further subscriptions. However currently I believe the view will be will people go down the pub to watch something they can get for free at home. Some of the viewers in pubs are people that don’t want to fork out for a PPV. However with DAZN it’s a subscription and if people already have it. Then will they bother going down the pub. it will be something that will be looked at down the line. But only if it’s a mega fight that pubs desperately want. AJ vs Usyk for instance
It’s only really those ‘PPV-style’ fights that attract the casual crowds in pubs that make it worthwhile. Same way you’ll get people who’ll happily shell out for Whyte and Chisora on PPV, but would never bother watching Josh Taylor or whoever on a regular Sky fight night - or wouldn’t sign up to a DAZN subscription. They’d have to launch something simple on commercial Sky boxes, similar to what Amazon do for their Premier League games by utilising BT’s capacity and red button channels, otherwise I’m not sure any pubs or bars would bother.
Yes, as PPV. They really are a completely **** channel for boxing. If Hearn had put Canelo Plant on PPV we would have gone nuts. Instead we had Canelo Smith and Canelo BJS for £2 a month. He might be Eddie Earn but he's the best value out there as far as boxing is concerned.
Can't agree. Their coverage front to back is far better than Sky and, to date, DAZN. Unfortunately the poor level of Frank's fight cards tend to overshadow the quality of their coverage. I hate that this is PPV though. Can't imagine there will be too many takers, after two PPVs in the prior six weeks.
I was thinking more about content rather than presentation. BT have always had an easy ride on here. I've forgotten how many times in the past, posters have said that BT have a contract with Top Rank and have been showing their fights. They didn't even show Frampton v Herring which was on 5. As you said the average Warren show makes a Mick Hennessey show look like the multi world title cards Don King used to put on.
It not a ppv fight over here. The market determines if it is value as a ppv and its going to bomb hard. A very small amount of people will pay £19.99 to watch that fight at 4am
