Haven't got the exact number but the viewing figures for Canelo/Fielding were apparently awful. Like, record breaking awful. Only a while ago I tipped DAZN to take over the sport. The money behind them and the prominence of netflix etc in an evolving world being the reasons I cited. However, on reflection, there's a few more points I must bring up: A.) If DAZN are to dominate, or even become a big player, it's going to take a lot more time and a lot more money. I can't classify them as a big player until their viewing figures multiply significantly. At the moment they're simply a vanity project that's hemmoragging money. I'd love to see the figures for Canelo/GGG 3 on DAZN. B.) Does boxing rely on the casual viewer too much for a format like DAZN to succeed? A large % of PPV buys are casual fans who are happy to buy one or two fights a year. Yes, a year of DAZN is actually cheaper than two American PPV's, but could these people be bothered to set up a direct debit with DAZN, when there's other PPV's remaining on alternative networks. Does DAZN have a single fight PPV option? If not, they need one. C.) DAZN is currently not the network to break America. The money is certainly good, but the exposure is next to nothing.
Nobody knows the numbers. Anyone telling you do is lying. The only numbers the public and journalists can have ANY idea of is how it does in the app charts and even that won't be useful after the first rush. DAZN was high up in the charts last week suggesting millions in the us gave it a go. The only people who DO know are...dazn. Why would they tip off people it wasn't doing well?!
Does it matter what the exact numbers are. All the rumoured figures have been very poor. Its clear there are issues with DAZN and its worth discussing even if it triggers the likes of you and the other Hearn nut sack suckers.
Getting exact no’s are one thing, but anybody who thinks there is no way of getting a gauage on DAZNs performance are deluded. The fact that they are already turning down content like Whyte- Chisora is an indication that things are not 100% well.
Give over. It's worth a discussion either way. Just as it would be if the reports were the opposite end of the scale. If you're sensitive about the issue there's something wrong mate.
The thing is boxing forums has taken this argument on from the viewpoint of the microcosm of boxing. Boxing isn't going to be the thing that sees DAZN as being a success in the US. They've done a ton of deals bigger than the Canelo deal in other sports worldwide. The other sports deals in the US they make will bring in the casuals. Hearn is setting up Matchroom in Italy and Germany as they already have millions of subscribers, in the hope of pulling in the casual fans in those countries.
Conversely people saying Haymon about to take over the UK, with fighters no UK promoters wants to touch and a format the UK has seen enough of.
What constitutes poor and what acceptable for this business at this stage of their entry into the market?
I said at the beginning boxing isn't what will determine whether DAZN is a success or failure. Boxing isn't big enough to carry a subscription service alone. It not that kind of sport. Its the core US sports which DAZN will need to get but they will have to wait for those which they clearly are prepared to do or wouldn't of launched in the US so soon. I would assume their world wide business can see them absorb a loss until the US business grows. Losing money isn't what spooks investors. Netflix has forever been losing money but its subscription numbers are what matters and what allows them to raise capital.
I couldn’t give a toss whether it’s DAZN or “netflix sport”. Streaming is the future. Most TV content I watch is Netflix or amazon prime, the US are spoilt by DAZN for the price of it. Get over the fact Eddie is/was the face of it, on paper it or something similar is fantastic for the sport.
Who is that aimed at? The OP is an honest opening for a debate. It's an info and opinion searcher. I don't care what promoter is the face of it. I'm a boxing fan and I want boxing to succeed on every platform that invests in the sport.
Nobody in particular. Just people who will try their hardest to say its shite because Hearn fronts it.
