They may currently be ranked in different divisions, but Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is now aiming for a ring showdown with Britain's Matthew Hatton. That fight would take place on September 18 at Staples Center in Los Angeles:deal
That would be a good step for Canelo - a decent, durable fighter who won't back down but probably doesn't have the pure talent to hang with Alvarez. Hatton might not want to risk getting stripped of his Euro title though, and there's a not insubstantial chance he could lose this weekend. Only drawback is he might become known as the guy who just fights good fighters' shittier brothers. And I don't care who they have Canelo fighting, I'm still not buying that shitty Mosley vs. Mora card, especially when Juanma vs. Marquez is on the same night.
Interesting choice. I think it would be competitive early before Alvarez takes over and stops him. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if Hatton loses on Friday. :huh They're both welters.
I'd like to see Ricky Hatton get his block KNOCKED OFF by Canelo...Matthew Hatton is not taht intriguing.
Canelo is closing on a world title and Matt is a solid fighter on his best run who could give Alvarez a good competitive fight. But no step back after this one: Canelo should go for quality over quantity and fight a top10 type of guy before the end of the year.
Canelo would definitely beat Hatton, no doubt about it....the question is, what round does the KO come in??
Saul dabbles in both but is currently ranked at light middleweight, where his last two fights have been (although one was against a former lightweight :yep). This is a slippery slope - Alvarez is good enough to tackle fringe contenders at 154 at this point...developing a reputation for picking on smaller men could lead to him not getting the credit he deserves in his development. Between the less famous Cotto and the less glamorous Hatton, critics would have plenty of ammunition. I'm actually a fan of just letting Saul stick where he is and not bother cutting back down again. He's not so little that he couldn't move up to middleweight to chase big money in a couple of years if there's a severe drought at super welter. He's more or less the same dimensions as the average elite at 160, and the guys who are much taller wouldn't care for his body attack...
