Out of all the things Sr showed Oscar he couldn't improve his natural stance. Oscar had one of the most defensively liable stances by squaring up and presenting a bigger target along with keeping his head right in the center line.

Oscar was not slick and/or Black enough to execute the shoulder roll!

Im no oscar fan, but thats not as much a failed shoulder roll as so many are saying.

He went into a defensive mode ready for the incoming to the head (I dont even see him really attempt a traditional shoulder roll to be honest, hes just getting defensive) when vargas went to his body instead, the force of Vargas's attack is what almost sends Hoya through the ropes through no real fault of Hoyas.

Then he actually does do the shoulder roll as vargas presses the attack after he almost goes through the ropes, and I wouldnt call it a failed attempt at all, he dodges a lot of the punches. Hes not as smooth with it as Mayweather and some others because its not his natural style.

But for going through the ropes almost, Its not Hoyas fault that Vargas wasnt an idiot like Ndou and Ortiz who continue to just throw to the head and look like fools when the body is right there.

    Just imo

    Great fight.

Damn, that opening combo of DLH's shows what I miss about not having that guy around any more.:good

But yeah, he does better whenever he slips to his old style. Wasn't it this fight where Foreman says "Oscar has to go back to the days when he had real trainers."?

Thanks for the vid. Reminded me how good Oscar used to be and how hard Vargas was hitting.
Fight might have been different had De La Hoya fighting Vargas before Trinidad. Could have easily been Oscar's first loss.

    No, it couldn't have.
However, DLH, under Alcazar, wouldn't have been hit as cleanly and would have taken out Vargas earlier.

Agreed the shoulder roll worked to a degree, although let's not pretend Oscar is quite the master of it that Floyd is either

This is why you dont try to change fighters style , because you just end of getting them smacked around the ring.

His shoulder roll actually gets quite good later on in the fight and proved to be effective.
